5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A full and accomplished life drew to a close with the |

6 | 7 | | passing of Ramon Perez of El Paso on November 26, 2015, at the age of |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Raised in El Paso, Ramon Perez was recognized by |

9 | 10 | | many in the area for his boxing career, for which he was |

10 | 11 | | memorialized with a mural bearing his likeness at the city's |

11 | 12 | | downtown De Soto Hotel; he was born on August 14, 1929, and began |
---|
12 | 13 | | boxing at a young age, eventually earning the 1949 El Paso Golden |

13 | 14 | | Gloves welterweight championship title as a teenager; he garnered |
---|
14 | 15 | | an impressive amateur record with 25 wins and 2 losses before |
---|
15 | 16 | | transitioning to professional status in the sport; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Traveling across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, |
---|
17 | 18 | | California, and Mexico, Mr. Perez competed in 70 professional |
---|
18 | 19 | | matches, winning 35 of the bouts by knockout; he went up against |
---|
19 | 20 | | many notable boxers of his era, including highly ranked figures |
---|
20 | 21 | | such as Juan Zavala and Jimmy Carter; in 2003, he was inducted into |

21 | 22 | | the El Paso Boxing Hall of Fame; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, After his boxing career, Mr. Perez went on to work |

23 | 24 | | for, and eventually retire from, a national chemical and gas supply |
---|
24 | 25 | | company; he subsequently founded, owned, and operated his own fire |
---|
25 | 26 | | extinguisher business; alongside him throughout his successes was |
---|
26 | 27 | | his devoted wife of 68 years, Alicia; he was also the proud father |
---|
27 | 28 | | of two children, Alicia and Ramon, and shared many cherished |
---|
28 | 29 | | moments with his 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Ramon Perez was a formidable opponent in the boxing |
---|
30 | 31 | | ring and a beloved figure in the El Paso community, and he will be |
---|
31 | 32 | | deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched; now, |
---|
32 | 33 | | therefore, be it |

33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Ramon Perez and |

35 | 36 | | extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends; and, be it |
