45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A full and accomplished life drew to a close with the
67 passing of Ramon Perez of El Paso on November 26, 2015, at the age of
78 86; and
89 WHEREAS, Raised in El Paso, Ramon Perez was recognized by
910 many in the area for his boxing career, for which he was
1011 memorialized with a mural bearing his likeness at the city's
1112 downtown De Soto Hotel; he was born on August 14, 1929, and began
1213 boxing at a young age, eventually earning the 1949 El Paso Golden
1314 Gloves welterweight championship title as a teenager; he garnered
1415 an impressive amateur record with 25 wins and 2 losses before
1516 transitioning to professional status in the sport; and
1617 WHEREAS, Traveling across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona,
1718 California, and Mexico, Mr. Perez competed in 70 professional
1819 matches, winning 35 of the bouts by knockout; he went up against
1920 many notable boxers of his era, including highly ranked figures
2021 such as Juan Zavala and Jimmy Carter; in 2003, he was inducted into
2122 the El Paso Boxing Hall of Fame; and
2223 WHEREAS, After his boxing career, Mr. Perez went on to work
2324 for, and eventually retire from, a national chemical and gas supply
2425 company; he subsequently founded, owned, and operated his own fire
2526 extinguisher business; alongside him throughout his successes was
2627 his devoted wife of 68 years, Alicia; he was also the proud father
2728 of two children, Alicia and Ramon, and shared many cherished
2829 moments with his 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and
2930 WHEREAS, Ramon Perez was a formidable opponent in the boxing
3031 ring and a beloved figure in the El Paso community, and he will be
3132 deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched; now,
3233 therefore, be it
3334 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3435 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Ramon Perez and
3536 extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends; and, be it
3637 further
3738 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3839 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3940 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ramon
4041 Perez.
