| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The area around present-day Rowlett was first |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | settled in the 1840s, notably by members of the Peters and Mercer |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Colonies; a post office was set up in 1880 and named Morris, after |

| 11 | 12 | | its first postmaster, but the name was later changed to Rowlett, |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | after Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the east fork of the Trinity |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | River; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the Dallas and Greenville Railway in |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | 1889 helped the town become a prosperous cotton farming community |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | with a school, churches, and businesses, and in 1921, it was |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | included on the route of the Bankhead Highway, the nation's second |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | cross-country paved highway; the city was incorporated in 1952 by a |

| 19 | 20 | | vote of 84 citizens; and |

| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Now with easy access to Dallas by way of the |

| 21 | 22 | | President George Bush Turnpike and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit |

| 22 | 23 | | light rail system, Rowlett has grown into a thriving community of |

| 23 | 24 | | more than 60,000 residents who enjoy 30 miles of beautiful Lake Ray |

| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The town has been named as a Tree City USA, and it |

| 26 | 27 | | has won recognition from the Texas Economic Development Council and |

| 28 | 29 | | achievements; popular annual events include an Easter egg hunt, |

| 29 | 30 | | fireworks on the Fourth of July, the Movies on Main series, and a |

| 30 | 31 | | holiday parade and tree lighting ceremony every Christmas; and |

| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Honoring their heritage as they embrace the |

| 32 | 33 | | opportunities of the future, the citizens of Rowlett may take |

| 33 | 34 | | justifiable pride in their efforts to cultivate such an attractive |
