45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Delnor Poss is retiring as head coach of the men's
67 golf team at Midland College on May 31, 2017, drawing to a close a
78 remarkable career with that institution that has spanned four
89 decades; and
910 WHEREAS, After graduating from San Angelo Central High
1011 School, Mr. Poss earned a bachelor's degree in business
1112 administration from Hardin-Simmons University, where he was a
1213 member of the basketball and track and field teams, and he
1314 subsequently received a master's degree in education from Sul Ross
1415 State University; he began his coaching career at Big Spring High
1516 School before joining the faculty of Midland College as director of
1617 athletics and men's golf coach in 1977; and
1718 WHEREAS, At the helm of the golf program, Coach Poss has
1819 compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, guiding Chaparral
1920 athletes to 29 consecutive appearances in the NJCAA National Men's
2021 Golf Tournament and winning 4 championships, as well as more than
2122 250 tournament titles overall; moreover, he has coached 49
2223 All-Americans, and many of his athletes have gone on to enjoy
2324 professional golf careers and to compete in major PGA tournaments;
2425 he also garnered international acclaim by coaching Team USA to a
2526 gold medal at the 1996 World University Games in Switzerland; and
2627 WHEREAS, Coach Poss has further benefited Texas athletics as
2728 a football and basketball referee for several college athletic
2829 conferences, as president of the Southwest Basketball Officials
2930 Association, and as a member of the University Interscholastic
3031 League Sports Committee; in recognition of his many achievements,
3132 he has been inducted into the Midland College Athletic Hall of Fame,
3233 the NJCAA Hall of Fame, the Hardin-Simmons University Athletic Hall
3334 of Fame, the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame, and
3435 the San Angelo Central High School Hall of Fame, and he was
3536 presented with an NJCAA Athletic Directors Achievement Award in
3637 1995; and
3738 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, this esteemed Texan is blessed
3839 with the love and support of his wife of 62 years, Martha, and he
3940 takes tremendous pride in his children, Nathan, Dell, and Mark, his
4041 daughters-in-law, Peggy Ann and Marla, and his grandchildren, Emil
4142 and Alexandra; and
4243 WHEREAS, With his exceptional ability to teach and motivate,
4344 Delnor Poss has created a notable legacy at Midland College, and he
4445 may indeed reflect with satisfaction on his long and successful
4546 career as he embarks on the next exciting chapter of his life; now,
4647 therefore, be it
4748 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4849 Legislature hereby congratulate Delnor Poss on his retirement as
4950 head coach of the Midland College men's golf team and extend to him
5051 sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
5152 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5253 prepared for Coach Poss as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5354 House of Representatives.
