| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Katy Independent School District celebrated the |

| 6 | 7 | | opening of the new Catherine Bethke Elementary School in the fall of |

| 7 | 8 | | 2016; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Recognizing the rapidly growing population in the |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | area, Katy ISD began the construction of Bethke Elementary in 2015, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | and when the school officially opened its doors on August 22, 2016, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | it welcomed some 500 young Texans in kindergarten through fifth |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | grade; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, This state-of-the-art facility features 48 |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | classrooms that can accommodate approximately 1,000 students, as |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | well as science labs, outdoor learning areas, an amphitheater, and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | a rock-climbing wall; moreover, the school employs the latest in |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | technology, including tablets and smart boards, and uses learning |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | equipment designed to better serve students with special needs; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The campus was named in honor of Catherine "Gigi" |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Bethke, who led a distinguished career with Katy ISD that spanned |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | more than three decades; she began her tenure teaching kindergarten |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | and first grade at Williamsburg Settlement Elementary School and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | later served on the faculties of Diane Winborn, Roosevelt |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Alexander, and Sue Creech Elementary Schools; in 2006, she was |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | named Creech Elementary Campus Teacher of the Year and Walmart |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Teacher of the Year, and she was a finalist for Katy ISD Teacher of |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | the Year; now retired, Ms. Bethke continues to contribute to the |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | district as a part-time gifted and talented assessment proctor and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | as a substitute teacher; and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Under the leadership of principal Carrie Lowery, |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Bethke Elementary reflects Katy ISD's ongoing commitment to |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | providing area schoolchildren with a solid educational foundation |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | on which to build, and it is a welcome addition to the district and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | to the greater community; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the opening of Catherine Bethke |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | Elementary School and extend to all those associated with this fine |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | institution sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | House of Representatives. |
