| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Zavala County are gathering in |

| 6 | 7 | | Austin on February 21, 2017, to celebrate Zavala County Day at the |

| 7 | 8 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the Winter Garden region of South Texas, |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Zavala County covers nearly 1,300 square miles of fertile plains |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | and wild brushland and is bisected by the Nueces River; the county |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | was created by the First Legislature of Texas in 1846 and named for |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican colonist and signer of the Texas |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Declaration of Independence; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The economy is supported by livestock and grain, |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | fruit, and vegetable farming; hunting and fishing opportunities |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | abound, and notable communities include Crystal City, La Pryor, and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Batesville; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Crystal City was laid out in 1905 and named for the |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | clear waters of a nearby artesian well; by 1908, the town had a post |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | office, a school, and a stop on the Uvalde Railway, and in 1928, it |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | was named the county seat; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The city is a hub for farming, ranching, and food |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | processing, with the Del Monte Corporation cannery contributing to |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | the economy of the region; self-styled as the Spinach Capital of the |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | World, the city holds a Spinach Festival that draws tens of |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | thousands of visitors every November with such activities as a |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | cook-off, a carnival and parade, and musical performances; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Zavala County take great pride in |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | future, and it is indeed fitting to honor their unique |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, |

| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
