| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Located in the Blackland Prairie of northeastern |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Texas, Hunt County was first inhabited by the Kiowa; Anglo settlers |

| 10 | 11 | | arrived in 1839, and the county was officially formed from parts of |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Fannin and Nacogdoches Counties in 1846; with Greenville as its |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | seat, the county was named after Memucan Hunt, secretary of the navy |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | and minister to Washington under the Republic of Texas; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, While the county's early economy depended mainly on |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | cotton, life changed dramatically after the Civil War; the arrival |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | of the railroad in the mid-1870s was a catalyst for 11 communities |

| 17 | 18 | | that sprang up around train depots, and by the early 20th century, |

| 18 | 19 | | Hunt County was home to the first municipally owned public |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | utilities in Texas and a number of industries centered around the |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | cotton trade, such as cotton-spinning mills, cotton compresses, and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | a cottonseed-oil refinery; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Hunt County has continued to grow; its diverse |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | economy now includes such industries as aircraft electronics and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | plastics distribution, and eight Fortune 500 companies have offices |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | in Greenville; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The county is well served by two institutions of |

| 27 | 28 | | higher learning, Texas A&M University--Commerce and the Greenville |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Center of Paris Junior College, and it is further enriched by a |

| 29 | 30 | | number of recreational and cultural attractions; picturesque Lake |

| 30 | 31 | | Tawakoni State Park is a destination for boating, swimming, |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | camping, and hiking, the Mathews Prairie Nature Preserve, a |

| 32 | 33 | | 100-acre tract of native prairie meadow that has never been plowed, |

| 33 | 34 | | is ideal for birders and wildflower enthusiasts, and the Audie |

| 34 | 35 | | Murphy/American Cotton Museum commemorates the importance of |

| 35 | 36 | | cotton to the region and celebrates the life of Hunt County native |
