 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Dr. Melvyn E. Huckaby has served the citizens of
 Houston as an oral surgeon for nearly half a century; and
 WHEREAS, A graduate of New Mexico Highlands University with a
 degree in chemistry and zoology, Dr. Huckaby went on to earn his DDS
 degree in 1962 from the Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry
 in Nashville, Tennessee; after interning at Harlem Hospital in New
 York and completing a postgraduate oral pathology program at the
 New York Institute of Clinical Oral Pathology, he returned to
 Harlem Hospital to work as a resident oral surgeon; and
 WHEREAS, In 1968, Dr. Huckaby established a private practice
 in his hometown of Houston, becoming the city's first African
 American oral surgeon; he operated the practice until 1990, when he
 joined the staff of the Craven & Plummer, Inc., Dental Center; he
 has since earned the admiration of many not only for his medical
 expertise but also for the compassion and care with which he treats
 his patients, including families of limited means; and
 WHEREAS, Over the years, Dr. Huckaby has served as a visiting
 professor and lecturer at his alma mater, Meharry's School of
 Dentistry, and he is a member of the American Association of Oral
 and Maxillofacial Surgeons; he has contributed to his community
 through his service on the board of the Resource Development Center
 and as secretary of Hope Development; in 2009, the New Mexico
 Highlands University Alumni Association honored him for his
 achievements with the Distinguished Alumnus Award; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Melvyn Huckaby has had a positive and lasting
 impact on countless lives throughout his long career in medicine,
 and he may reflect with considerable pride on all that he has
 accomplished; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
 Legislature hereby commend Dr. Melvyn E. Huckaby for his many years
 of service as an oral surgeon and extend to him sincere best wishes
 for the future; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Dr. Huckaby as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
