45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Students from Goose Creek Consolidated Independent
67 School District took home multiple awards from the National History
78 Day contest, held in College Park, Maryland, June 12-16, 2016; and
89 WHEREAS, Continuing the district's long tradition of success
910 in the competition, Benjamin Warford-Johnston of Gentry Junior High
1011 School won first place in the junior division individual paper
1112 category with his historical paper titled "American Colonial
1213 Committees of Correspondence: Encountering Oppression, Exploring
1314 Unity, and Exchanging Visions of the Future"; and
1415 WHEREAS, Danielle Garcia and Priscilla Garcia, students at
1516 Ross S. Sterling High School, placed second in the nation for their
1617 senior group exhibit, "WWII Women Air Force Service Pilots:
1718 Exchanging Traditional Roles, Exploring Military Aviation and
1819 Encountering Discrimination"; their exhibit was also selected by
1920 Texas History Day coordinators to be displayed at the American
2021 History Museum in Washington, D. C.; and
2122 WHEREAS, Tomas de la Rosa of Ross S. Sterling High earned
2223 third place for his senior historical paper, "An Alien Race That
2324 Should be Segregated Socially: Mendez v. Westminster," and two
2425 other Sterling students, Kyleigh Fanning and Matthew Broussard,
2526 received the George Washington Leadership in History Award for
2627 their senior group documentary, From Confederation to Nation;
2728 moreover, the Legacy Award for outstanding past and present
2829 accomplishments in the competition was given to Mr. Broussard, who
2930 won individual performance first-place prizes at National History
3031 Day in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015; and
3132 WHEREAS, Havi Nguyen of Ross S. Sterling also made an
3233 impressive showing in the senior individual exhibit category,
3334 further adding to Goose Creek CISD students' many achievements at
3435 the event; and
3536 WHEREAS, These talented young men and women demonstrated
3637 outstanding intelligence and resourcefulness with their stellar
3738 performance at National History Day, and they have brought
3839 tremendous pride to their families, to their schools, and to the
3940 State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby congratulate Benjamin Warford-Johnston,
4243 Danielle Garcia, Priscilla Garcia, Tomas de la Rosa, Kyleigh
4344 Fanning, Matthew Broussard, and Havi Nguyen on their superb efforts
4445 at the 2016 National History Day competition and extend to them
4546 sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4647 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
4748 for the students as an expression of high regard by the Texas House
4849 of Representatives.
