| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated members of the Grand Prairie Unity |

| 6 | 7 | | Coalition are gathering on February 23, 2017, for the group's 12th |

| 7 | 8 | | annual Unity Fund-Raiser Banquet; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, GPUC was established by city council member Richard |

| 9 | 10 | | Fregoe in 2004 with the worthwhile goal of promoting awareness, |

| 10 | 11 | | inclusiveness, and community spirit; and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the diverse membership of GPUC has |

| 12 | 13 | | promoted cross-cultural understanding through its participation in |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | many events, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | program, the Cinco de Mayo parade, a Native American powwow, and the |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | annual Juneteenth parade; the group has also collaborated with area |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | businesses and with such organizations as the NAACP and LULAC; as a |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | result of the coalition's contributions, the City of Grand Prairie |

| 18 | 19 | | was acknowledged as an Inclusive City by the National League of |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Cities in 2006; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The annual Unity Banquet is the organization's |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | signature event, and a highlight of the festivities is the |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | announcement of the student art contest winners; conducted in |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | coordination with the Grand Prairie Arts Council, this year's |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | competition celebrates the theme "Promoting Unity and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Understanding in Our Community"; in addition, the evening will |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | feature as keynote speaker Grand Prairie Independent School |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | District superintendent Dr. Susan Hull, as well as a performance by |

| 28 | 29 | | the district's award-winning mariachi band; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Through their commitment to furthering acceptance |

| 30 | 31 | | and diversity, the members of the Grand Prairie Unity Coalition are |

| 31 | 32 | | helping to build a stronger and more vibrant community, and their |

| 32 | 33 | | accomplishments are indeed deserving of special recognition; now, |

| 34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 35 | 36 | | Legislature hereby honor the Grand Prairie Unity Coalition on the |

| 36 | 37 | | occasion of its 12th annual Unity Fund-Raiser Banquet and extend to |

| 37 | 38 | | the members of this noteworthy organization sincere best wishes for |

| 38 | 39 | | continued success with their important work; and, be it further |
