| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas is making a positive |

| 7 | 8 | | San Antonio area and beyond; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A chartered council of Girl Scouts of the USA, GSSWT |

| 9 | 10 | | is headquartered at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center |

| 10 | 11 | | in San Antonio and serves nearly 18,500 Girl Scouts from 21 counties |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | in Southwest Texas; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, This outstanding nonprofit seeks to equip girls with |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | the knowledge and skills necessary to become leaders, encouraging |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | them to maintain healthy lifestyles, care for the environment, |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | study new technologies, and take pride in their country; with the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | help of a team of committed adult volunteers, GSSWT offers a variety |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | of fun and educational activities and programs, including Camp |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Metro, a day camp at the West Side Girl Scout Leadership Center; the |

| 19 | 20 | | council also operates Camp La Jita, a facility along the Sabinal |

| 20 | 21 | | River, where scouts can enjoy stays of a week or longer; and |

| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Partially supported through the sale of Girl Scout |

| 22 | 23 | | cookies, GSSWT is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the cookie |

| 23 | 24 | | program in 2017; now available from troops throughout the nation |

| 24 | 25 | | and even online, the first Girl Scout cookies made their debut in |

| 25 | 26 | | 1917, when a troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, began selling homemade |

| 26 | 27 | | treats to raise money; over the succeeding years, the cookies |

| 27 | 28 | | became a cornerstone of the Girl Scout experience, one that not only |

| 28 | 29 | | provides financial support for vital initiatives and community |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | service projects but also helps members acquire skills in |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | entrepreneurship, goal setting, and teamwork; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Inspiring young women to take charge of their |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | destinies and effect positive change in the world, Girl Scouts of |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | Southwest Texas is helping to foster a generation of engaged and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | thoughtful citizens, and it is indeed deserving of recognition for |

| 35 | 36 | | its efforts; now, therefore, be it |

| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby commend Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas for |

| 38 | 39 | | enriching the lives of many young Texans and extend to all those |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | associated with the organization sincere best wishes for the |
|---|
