| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Many proud representatives from the La Joya |

| 6 | 7 | | Independent School District are gathering in Austin on February 27, |

| 7 | 8 | | 2017, in celebration of La Joya ISD Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A rapidly growing district, La Joya ISD includes 23 |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 6 high schools, as well as |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the College and Career Center and two academies; the administration |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | has worked tirelessly to encourage more young people to pursue |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | higher education, and to date, students in dual-enrollment courses |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | have received more than 44,000 hours of college credit; in |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | addition, students in career and technology programs have earned |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | over 2,000 certificates; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, More than 94 percent of students graduate with a |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | recommended or distinguished achievement diploma, and the |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | three-year dropout rate is less than three percent; in the most |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | recent year, the district "met standard," the top Texas Education |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Agency rating; it offers a well-rounded curriculum, and students |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | have excelled in such areas as band competitions and the ExxonMobil |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Texas Science and Engineering Fair; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The district benefits greatly from the vision and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | expertise of superintendent Dr. Alda Benavides, who was named 2015 |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Superintendent of the Year for Region 1 by the Texas Association of |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | School Boards; under her leadership, La Joya ISD has invested |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | significantly in technology, science laboratory materials, |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | employee and student wellness, and safety; moreover, the district |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | added 10 new school buses; teachers, hourly employees, and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | administrators all received raises in consecutive years, yet |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | property taxes were not increased; the district has received |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | approval for a natatorium, a student resource center, and a new |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | employee health clinic building; and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, The education of young Texans is a vital enterprise, |

| 35 | 36 | | and the La Joya Independent School District has demonstrated a |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | strong commitment to providing a challenging and supportive |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | learning environment to prepare its graduates for future success; |

| 38 | 39 | | now, therefore, be it |

| 39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 27, 2017, as La Joya ISD Day |
