| 8 | 9 | | heritage, and in the year 2017, the city's residents are once again |

| 9 | 10 | | gathering in observance of this notable occasion; and |

| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the stunning victory |

| 11 | 12 | | achieved by Mexican troops over an invading French army at the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862; led by General Ignacio Zaragoza |

| 13 | 14 | | Seguin, an untrained militia of some 4,500 Mexicans routed 6,500 |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | French soldiers, considered to be among the best military troops in |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | the world; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The Grand Prairie celebration of Cinco de Mayo not |

| 17 | 18 | | only pays tribute to a significant date in Mexican history but also |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | assists area students through the raising of scholarship funds; |

| 19 | 20 | | this year's event would not be possible without the hard work and |

| 20 | 21 | | dedication of the Cinco de Mayo Committee and the sponsorship of a |

| 21 | 22 | | number of local businesses and organizations; and |

| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In commemorating Cinco de Mayo, we honor the ideals |

| 23 | 24 | | of freedom and self-determination and the willingness to take on |

| 24 | 25 | | seemingly overwhelming odds in behalf of a worthwhile cause, and it |

| 25 | 26 | | is a pleasure to join the citizens of Grand Prairie in observing |

| 26 | 27 | | this proud day in Mexican history, a day whose significance |

| 27 | 28 | | continues to speak to people around the world; now, therefore, be it |
