| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Citizens and business leaders of Montgomery County |

| 6 | 7 | | are gathering in Austin on March 7, 2017, to celebrate Montgomery |

| 7 | 8 | | County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Situated at the southern edge of the Piney Woods of |

| 9 | 10 | | East Texas, Montgomery County was established by the Congress of |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the Republic of Texas in 1837; the county is officially |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | acknowledged as the Birthplace of the Lone Star Flag because the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | design presented by resident Dr. Charles B. Stewart was adopted by |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | the Texas Congress in 1839 and has remained the banner of the state |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | since it joined the Union in 1845; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the railroads in the 1870s and 1880s |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | sparked a lumber boom that revived Montgomery County's agricultural |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | economy after the Civil War; Houston lumberman Isaac Conroe |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | established a sawmill at a railroad junction near Stewarts Creek in |

| 19 | 20 | | 1881, and the town of Conroe that grew up around the mill was named |

| 20 | 21 | | the county seat eight years later; in 1931, the discovery of oil |

| 21 | 22 | | triggered yet another financial upsurge in the area, and today, oil |

| 22 | 23 | | production, the lumber industry, and ranching further the county's |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | prosperity; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Visitors from across the state are drawn to the |

| 25 | 26 | | region's vibrant historical and cultural establishments, and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the recreational opportunities at Sam |

| 27 | 28 | | Houston National Forest, W. Goodrich Jones State Forest, and Lake |

| 28 | 29 | | Conroe Park; additionally, The Woodlands, a master-planned |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | community, is home to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, a major |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | concert venue as well as the summer residence of the Houston |

| 31 | 32 | | Symphony; and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, This visit to the State Capitol was organized by the |

| 33 | 34 | | Conroe/Lake Conroe, Woodlands Area, Greater Magnolia Parkway, |

| 34 | 35 | | Greater East Montgomery County, and Montgomery Area Chambers of |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | Commerce; members of each association work to improve and |

| 36 | 37 | | strengthen economic development and the quality of life throughout |

| 37 | 38 | | Montgomery County, which, with a current population of more than |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | half a million people, is one of the fastest growing counties in the |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | nation; and |

| 40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, The people of Montgomery County take great pride in |

| 41 | 42 | | their rich history as they work to build an even brighter future, |

| 42 | 43 | | and it is indeed fitting to honor them and their unique |

| 43 | 44 | | contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, |

| 45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 7, 2017, as Montgomery County |
