5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Suzanne J. Nelson, superintendent of the |

6 | 7 | | Tuloso-Midway Independent School District, has been named the 2016 |

7 | 8 | | Superintendent of the Year for Education Service Center Region 2; |
---|
8 | 9 | | and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Since 1984, the Texas Association of School Boards |
---|
10 | 11 | | has sponsored this annual award to recognize local school district |
---|
11 | 12 | | superintendents for their leadership skills, commitment to public |
---|
12 | 13 | | involvement in education, and dedication to improving educational |
---|
13 | 14 | | quality, student performance, and employee relations; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dr. Nelson |
---|
15 | 16 | | began her career as a teacher in Edmond, Oklahoma; she joined the |
---|
16 | 17 | | Tuloso-Midway ISD as director of elementary and secondary education |
---|
17 | 18 | | in 1984, and two years later, she became district superintendent; |
---|
18 | 19 | | after 12 years' outstanding service in that post, she retired in |
---|
19 | 20 | | 1998, but in 1999 she accepted an appointment as school |
---|
20 | 21 | | superintendent in Eagle Pass; subsequent attempts at a life of |
---|
21 | 22 | | leisure were equally short-lived: she returned to lead |
---|
22 | 23 | | Tuloso-Midway again in 2005, took up the reins of George West ISD in |
---|
23 | 24 | | 2007, and embarked on her third tenure as superintendent of |
---|
24 | 25 | | Tuloso-Midway in 2010; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Since returning to the district six years ago, Dr. |
---|
26 | 27 | | Nelson has been instrumental in securing the passage of several |
---|
27 | 28 | | measures, including a $36 million bond package, that have enabled |
---|
28 | 29 | | the construction and renovation of a number of school facilities; |
---|
29 | 30 | | her successful efforts to improve the district's financial |
---|
30 | 31 | | practices have resulted in top ratings from the School Financial |
---|
31 | 32 | | Integrity Rating System of Texas, and she has also increased the |
---|
32 | 33 | | diversity of her district's administrative team and professional |
---|
33 | 34 | | staff; of her many accomplishments at Tuloso-Midway over the years, |
---|
34 | 35 | | she takes greatest pride in leading the transition to a year-round |
---|
35 | 36 | | school calendar, which the district introduced in 1994; in |
---|
36 | 37 | | appreciation for all that she has done in behalf of TMISD, the |
---|
37 | 38 | | performing arts center at Tuloso-Midway High School was named in |
---|
38 | 39 | | her honor in 2014; and |
---|
39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sue Nelson's hard work and commitment to |
---|
40 | 41 | | excellence have made a positive difference in the lives of |
---|
41 | 42 | | countless Texas students for more than 30 years, and her receipt of |
---|
42 | 43 | | this prestigious accolade provides a fitting opportunity to |
---|
43 | 44 | | recognize her outstanding contributions to the Lone Star State; |

44 | 45 | | now, therefore, be it |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Suzanne J. Nelson on her |

47 | 48 | | selection as the 2016 Region 2 Superintendent of the Year and extend |

48 | 49 | | to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |

49 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
