| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Kinney County are gathering in |

| 6 | 7 | | Austin on February 22, 2017, to celebrate Kinney County Day at the |

| 7 | 8 | | State Capitol; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Located west of San Antonio in the Rio Grande Plains |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | region, Kinney County was created in 1850 and named for early |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | settler and adventurer Henry Lawrence Kinney; the United States |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Army established Fort Riley, later known as Fort Clark, along Las |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Moras Creek in 1852, and the community of Brackett was formed later |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | that same year; by 1876, the final boundaries of the county had been |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | set by the Texas Legislature, and the renamed town of Brackettville |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | was designated as the county seat; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, cattle ranching has dominated the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | economy of Kinney County, and wool and mohair production played an |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | important part in the nation's efforts during World War II; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, tourists are drawn to the county by such |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | attractions as Kickapoo Cavern State Park and Fort Clark Springs, a |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | community that provides visitors and residents alike with |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | opportunities for camping, swimming, and tours of the Old |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Guardhouse Museum; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The people of Kinney County are confidently facing |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | the future while continuing to embrace their vibrant heritage, and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | it is indeed fitting to honor their contributions to the story of |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

| 28 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
