| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, St. Philip's College in San Antonio is unveiling the |

| 6 | 6 | | Honorable Ruth Jones McClendon Collection with a ribbon-cutting |

| 7 | 7 | | ceremony on February 28, 2017; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Ruth Jones McClendon served on the San Antonio City |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Council for three years before winning election to the District 120 |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | seat in the Texas House of Representatives in 1996; over the course |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | of two decades of service in the state legislature, she gained |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | prominence for her advocacy in behalf of children and the elderly; |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | moreover, she distinguished herself as chair of the Rules and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Resolutions Committee and as chair of budget and oversight for the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Pensions and Investments Committee, as well as through her work as a |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | member of the Appropriations Committee and numerous other |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | committees; she is the recipient of a host of awards and honors, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | including the 2006 Regional and State Legislator of the Year Awards |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | from the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards and the 2009 |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Outstanding Leadership Award from the Texas Criminal Justice |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Coalition; she retired from office on January 31, 2016; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, St. Philip's College, which is the only institution |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | of higher education in the country to be federally designated as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic-Serving |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Institution, has amassed an impressive collection of materials from |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Ms. McClendon's time in office at both the municipal and state |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | levels; highlights from the archive are being placed on display, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | including awards, certificates, diplomas, books, and photographs, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | all of which help provide insight into her life and career; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, A highly esteemed stateswoman, Ruth Jones McClendon |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | served her fellow citizens with tremendous commitment and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | enthusiasm for nearly a quarter century; this collection stands as |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | a fitting tribute to her legacy, and it is sure to be a source of |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | inspiration for others who aspire to work in behalf of their |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | community; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Honorable Ruth Jones McClendon Collection at St. Philip's College |

| 39 | 39 | | and commend all those who helped bring this worthwhile project to |

| 40 | 40 | | fruition; and, be it further |
