44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, St. Philip's College in San Antonio is unveiling the
66 Honorable Ruth Jones McClendon Collection with a ribbon-cutting
77 ceremony on February 28, 2017; and
88 WHEREAS, Ruth Jones McClendon served on the San Antonio City
99 Council for three years before winning election to the District 120
1010 seat in the Texas House of Representatives in 1996; over the course
1111 of two decades of service in the state legislature, she gained
1212 prominence for her advocacy in behalf of children and the elderly;
1313 moreover, she distinguished herself as chair of the Rules and
1414 Resolutions Committee and as chair of budget and oversight for the
1515 Pensions and Investments Committee, as well as through her work as a
1616 member of the Appropriations Committee and numerous other
1717 committees; she is the recipient of a host of awards and honors,
1818 including the 2006 Regional and State Legislator of the Year Awards
1919 from the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards and the 2009
2020 Outstanding Leadership Award from the Texas Criminal Justice
2121 Coalition; she retired from office on January 31, 2016; and
2222 WHEREAS, St. Philip's College, which is the only institution
2323 of higher education in the country to be federally designated as
2424 both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic-Serving
2525 Institution, has amassed an impressive collection of materials from
2626 Ms. McClendon's time in office at both the municipal and state
2727 levels; highlights from the archive are being placed on display,
2828 including awards, certificates, diplomas, books, and photographs,
2929 all of which help provide insight into her life and career; and
3030 WHEREAS, A highly esteemed stateswoman, Ruth Jones McClendon
3131 served her fellow citizens with tremendous commitment and
3232 enthusiasm for nearly a quarter century; this collection stands as
3333 a fitting tribute to her legacy, and it is sure to be a source of
3434 inspiration for others who aspire to work in behalf of their
3535 community; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3737 Legislature hereby commemorate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the
3838 Honorable Ruth Jones McClendon Collection at St. Philip's College
3939 and commend all those who helped bring this worthwhile project to
4040 fruition; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4242 prepared for St. Philip's College as an expression of high regard
4343 by the Texas House of Representatives.
