| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Covering approximately 870 square miles of lush |

| 9 | 10 | | grasslands, warm beaches, and sparkling waters, Galveston County |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | has a history highlighted by explorers, pirates, and international |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | intrigue, but it also holds the record for the country's deadliest |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | natural disaster with the hurricane that made landfall in September |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | 1900 and killed more than 6,000 people; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The ports of Galveston and Texas City contributed |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | greatly to the rebuilding of the area after the hurricane, and along |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | with the chemical and petrochemical complex, continue to be |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | important to the economic development of the county; additionally, |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | agriculture, livestock, and the fishing and shrimping industries |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | provide jobs for many residents of the region; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Galveston today is a center for medical services, |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | marine research, and a number of institutions of higher education, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | including The University of Texas Medical Branch, Texas A&M |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | University at Galveston, the College of the Mainland, and Galveston |

| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, With nearly 400 miles of beaches, visitors are drawn |

| 26 | 27 | | to the county's natural beauty and also enjoy such attractions as |

| 27 | 28 | | the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo, the Galveston Island Wild |

| 28 | 29 | | Texas Shrimp Festival, and the Blessing of the Fleet at Kemah; other |

| 29 | 30 | | points of interest include the Lone Star Flight Museum, Moody |

| 30 | 31 | | Gardens, and the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier; and |

| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Galveston County is blessed with abundant natural |
