45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Each year, Mexicans and Hispanics of Mexican descent
67 celebrate Diez y Seis as Mexican Independence Day, as they recall
78 the historic events of September 16, 1810; and
89 WHEREAS, Diez y Seis de Septiembre marks the beginning of the
910 revolution that occurred after years of oppressive rule by Spain;
1011 Catholic priest and national hero Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla touched
1112 off the long-simmering rebellion when he ordered the arrest of
1213 native Spaniards in the town of Dolores and encouraged the
1314 indigenous peoples of Mexico to overthrow the brutal Spanish
1415 regime; and
1516 WHEREAS, Today, Father Hidalgo is revered as the father of
1617 Mexican independence; his call for freedom and for social and
1718 economic justice continues to evoke heartfelt feelings of pride and
1819 patriotism at home and to inspire oppressed people of all
1920 nationalities; and
2021 WHEREAS, Every year on September 16, Father Hidalgo's Grito
2122 de Independencia, or "Shout of Independence," is proclaimed by the
2223 president of Mexico from the balcony of the National Palace, as well
2324 as by the governor of each state, and the cry "Viva Mexico" resounds
2425 from the gathered multitudes in tribute to this national hero and
2526 all who took up the long, arduous struggle for self-determination;
2627 now, therefore, be it
2728 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
2829 Legislature hereby recognize Diez y Seis de Septiembre, 2017, and
2930 pay tribute to the many native Mexicans who gave their lives in the
3031 quest for freedom and independence.
