| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, St. Mary's University in San Antonio is marking the |

| 6 | 7 | | bicentennial of the Society of Mary on April 1, 2017; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In the wake of the French Revolution, Father William |

| 8 | 9 | | Joseph Chaminade, a diocesan priest, returned from exile in Spain |

| 9 | 10 | | and began forming small faith communities under the patronage of |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the Blessed Mother; membership in the early Marianist Lay |

| 11 | 12 | | Communities reached nearly 1,000 by 1809, and in 1816, Father |

| 12 | 13 | | Chaminade supported Adéle de Batz de Trenquelléon in the |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | establishment of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, now known as the |

| 14 | 15 | | Marianist Sisters; the following year, the Society of Mary was |

| 15 | 16 | | created under his direction; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, With a profound commitment to education, the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Marianists expanded through Europe and beyond, reaching America in |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | 1849; four brothers from the order traveled to San Antonio by |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | stagecoach, and in 1852 they founded St. Mary's Institute to |

| 20 | 21 | | promote the ideals of academic excellence, ethical commitment, and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | service to the community; today, that same devotion to faith, |

| 22 | 23 | | learning, and philanthropy continues to inform the successor |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | institutions, St. Mary's University and Central Catholic High |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | School; and |

| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The Society of Mary has worked since its inception |

| 26 | 27 | | to develop scholarship, leadership, and strong moral character, and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | this historic milestone provides a welcome opportunity to recognize |

| 28 | 29 | | the Marianists for their positive impact on the lives of many |

| 29 | 30 | | generations of Texans; now, therefore, be it |

| 30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 31 | 32 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the bicentennial of the Society of |

| 32 | 33 | | Mary and extend to all those participating in the observance at |

| 33 | 34 | | St. Mary's University sincere best wishes for a memorable and |
