6 | 7 | | memories of Charles Murray Oliver Jr. of Waxahachie, who died on |

7 | 8 | | January 27, 2017, at the age of 85; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Charles Oliver was born in San Saba on January 25, |

9 | 10 | | 1932, to Dr. Charles Murray Oliver and Bertha Maureen Taylor |
---|
10 | 11 | | Oliver; he attended Tarleton State University and earned his |
---|
11 | 12 | | bachelor's degree in animal husbandry from Southwest Texas State |
---|
12 | 13 | | Teachers College; answering his nation's call to duty, he served in |
---|
13 | 14 | | the U.S. Air Force; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Oliver enjoyed a long and successful career in |
---|
15 | 16 | | the insurance industry; he was vice president and agency director |
---|
16 | 17 | | for Southern Provident Life Insurance Company and the Dallas agency |
---|
17 | 18 | | manager for American General Life Insurance Company before opening |
---|
18 | 19 | | his own agency, Oliver & Associates; he was also active in the |
---|
19 | 20 | | commercial real estate market, helping to develop the area around |
---|
20 | 21 | | Galleria Dallas; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In his private life, Mr. Oliver was a popular |
---|
22 | 23 | | teacher and speaker on the subject of Texas history, and he |
---|
23 | 24 | | established a working ranch to preserve the heritage of the West; he |
---|
24 | 25 | | created the Homeplace Horse and Buggy Company to restore and build |
---|
25 | 26 | | authentic horse-drawn vehicles, which were featured for nearly 40 |
---|
26 | 27 | | years at the Fort Worth Livestock Show and Rodeo Parade, and in |
---|
27 | 28 | | 1986, he served as president and chair of the Texas |
---|
28 | 29 | | Sesquicentennial Wagon Train; a deacon at First Baptist Church of |
---|
29 | 30 | | Dallas for 43 years, he combined his love of Western heritage and |
---|
30 | 31 | | his deep religious faith through his work with the Cowboy Church |
---|
31 | 32 | | movement and as the founder of the Chuck Wagon Ministry; he was also |
---|
32 | 33 | | a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Oliver and his first wife, the late Mary Lou |
---|
34 | 35 | | Luster, were blessed with two daughters, Susan Bradley and |
---|
35 | 36 | | Elizabeth Herritage; in 1994, he married Pamela J. Bowman and he |
---|
36 | 37 | | welcomed into his family her son, Damon Bowman; Mr. Oliver also took |
---|
37 | 38 | | great pride in his six grandchildren, Taylor, Hunter, Hogan, |
---|
38 | 39 | | Addison, Ethan, and Grace, and in his two great-grandchildren, |
---|
39 | 40 | | Oliver and Davison; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, An engaged member of his community and a proud |
---|
41 | 42 | | Texan, Charles Oliver lived a rich and purposeful life, and he will |
---|
42 | 43 | | forever remain a vibrant presence in the hearts of all those who |
---|
43 | 44 | | were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Charles Murray |
---|
46 | 47 | | Oliver Jr. and extend heartfelt sympathy to his many relatives and |
---|
47 | 48 | | friends; and, be it further |

48 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

49 | 50 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

50 | 51 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charles |
