5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

6 | 7 | | death of Henry Rugeley Ferguson of San Antonio on January 2, 2017, |

7 | 8 | | at the age of 86; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Rugeley Ferguson was born in Houston on April 11, |
---|
9 | 10 | | 1930, to William Brownlee Ferguson Jr. and Mary Le Tulle Rugeley; he |
---|
10 | 11 | | attended Sewanee Military Academy and The University of Texas at |
---|
11 | 12 | | Austin, and in his senior year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army; |
---|
12 | 13 | | he served with distinction at Inchon in Korea from 1953 to 1955, |
---|
13 | 14 | | earning the Bronze Star and retiring in the reserves at the rank of |
---|
14 | 15 | | captain; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1963, Mr. Ferguson married Kittie West Nelson, |
---|
16 | 17 | | and the couple shared nearly four decades together; he was the proud |
---|
17 | 18 | | father of two children, Kittie West Ferguson and Henry Rugeley |
---|
18 | 19 | | Ferguson Jr., and later in life he was blessed with two |
---|
19 | 20 | | grandchildren, Reese and Presley; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his working life, Mr. Ferguson |
---|
21 | 22 | | looked after his family's ranch near Bay City, traveled the rodeo |
---|
22 | 23 | | circuit as a professional bronc rider, managed the 20,000 acres of |
---|
23 | 24 | | Hashknife Ranches, and bred and raised horses; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Ferguson served his community as a director of |

25 | 26 | | Texas Agribusiness and Port City Stockyards and the Scobey Moving |
---|
26 | 27 | | and Storage Company, as president of the San Antonio Zoological |
---|
27 | 28 | | Society and the Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital Foundation, and |
---|
28 | 29 | | as a board member of Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children, the |
---|
29 | 30 | | San Antonio Museum Association, and the Charity Ball Association, |
---|
30 | 31 | | among others; in addition, he was a member of the San Antonio |
---|
31 | 32 | | Country Club, the Argyle Club, and Club Giraud, and he served as a |
---|
32 | 33 | | Special Texas Ranger; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A man of diverse interests, Mr. Ferguson rode horses |
---|
34 | 35 | | until well into his 60s, logged more than 100 hours as a scuba diver |
---|
35 | 36 | | in the Caribbean, and enjoyed hunting with his friends and |
---|
36 | 37 | | acquaintances; he also took delight in travel, lively conversation, |
---|
37 | 38 | | and art, and his extensive personal collection of Wedgwood china is |
---|
38 | 39 | | on loan to the San Antonio Museum of Art; and |
---|
39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, A true Texas gentleman, Rugeley Ferguson lived his |
---|
40 | 41 | | life to the fullest, and he will forever remain a vibrant presence |
---|
41 | 42 | | for those who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Henry Rugeley |
---|
44 | 45 | | Ferguson and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn his |
---|
45 | 46 | | passing; and, be it further |

46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

47 | 48 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

48 | 49 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rugeley |
