6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The United States is a nation of immigrants, and our |

7 | 7 | | influence in the world has been immeasurably enhanced by our |

8 | 8 | | enduring identity as a land of freedom and opportunity for |

9 | 9 | | resourceful persons of all colors, creeds, and origins; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Since colonial days, the American character has been |
---|
11 | 11 | | associated with boldness, determination, and an exceptional work |
---|
12 | 12 | | ethic, all traits possessed by those who elect to leave the familiar |
---|
13 | 13 | | behind and start their lives over in another country; successive |
---|
14 | 14 | | waves of newcomers have replenished our drive, enriched our |
---|
15 | 15 | | culture, and advanced our prosperity; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Immigrants bring innovative ideas and |

17 | 17 | | entrepreneurial spirit, as well as business connections that |

18 | 18 | | promote international trade and investment; they tend to arrive in |
---|
19 | 19 | | their prime working years, making huge net contributions to Social |
---|
20 | 20 | | Security and other senior entitlement programs; keeping the economy |

21 | 21 | | flexible, they often fill key niches in the labor market where |
---|
22 | 22 | | demand outstrips supply, at both the low and high ends of the skill |
---|
23 | 23 | | spectrum; and |

24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The power of immigration to spur economic growth is |

25 | 25 | | particularly evident in high-technology and other knowledge-based |
---|
26 | 26 | | sectors; the chief executive officers of such major tech companies |
---|
27 | 27 | | as Microsoft, Google, Oracle, and SpaceX were all born overseas, |

28 | 28 | | and immigrants have developed myriad products, such as the Java |
---|
29 | 29 | | computer language, that have created jobs for millions of |
---|
30 | 30 | | Americans; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, An America without immigrants would be poorer, |
---|
32 | 32 | | weaker, and less dynamic, and in an increasingly fluid and |
---|
33 | 33 | | challenging global economy, our competitiveness depends on our |
---|
34 | 34 | | continued ability to attract the best and the brightest from around |
---|
35 | 35 | | the world; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby reaffirm America's proud tradition as a beacon |
---|
38 | 38 | | of liberty and express support for the constitutional rights of |
---|
39 | 39 | | lawful immigrants. |
