5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Chinese Society of Austin has made a positive |

6 | 7 | | difference in the lives of countless Chinese Americans while |

7 | 8 | | significantly contributing to the cultural vitality of its |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The CSA follows in the footsteps of a predecessor |

10 | 11 | | organization, the Chinese Professional Association, which was |

11 | 12 | | established in 1975 and which was renamed the Austin Chinese |

12 | 13 | | Association in 1979; that group remained active in Austin until |
---|
13 | 14 | | 1992, when a downturn in the local economy resulted in the departure |
---|
14 | 15 | | of a number of Chinese Americans, many of whom worked in the |
---|
15 | 16 | | high-tech sector; in 1996, George Chang, who served as the first |
---|
16 | 17 | | president of the CPA, and Paul Chen spearheaded the formation of the |
---|
17 | 18 | | CSA, whose leadership today includes Meiching Chou, president, |
---|
18 | 19 | | Peter Chao, vice president, and Millie Chu, treasurer; and |

19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The CSA seeks to unite area Chinese Americans from |

20 | 21 | | mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and to promote their |

21 | 22 | | participation in the social, cultural, and economic life of the |
---|
22 | 23 | | wider community; partnering closely with the City of Austin and the |
---|
23 | 24 | | Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, the society serves |
---|
24 | 25 | | as a clearinghouse for news and information of interest to Chinese |
---|
25 | 26 | | Americans, and it also hosts a number of annual events, including a |
---|
26 | 27 | | Chinese New Year celebration and the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival; |

27 | 28 | | moreover, the group is a founding member of the Network of Asian |
---|
28 | 29 | | American Organizations and a proud sponsor of the Austin Chinese |

29 | 30 | | Alliance; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, The Chinese Society of Austin has rendered |

31 | 32 | | invaluable service to its members while enriching the diverse |

32 | 33 | | character of the community at large, and as Austin and its Asian |

33 | 34 | | population continue to grow, it can indeed look forward to a bright |

34 | 35 | | and vibrant future; now, therefore, be it |

35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby honor the Chinese Society of Austin for its |

37 | 38 | | outstanding contributions to the community and extend to all those |
