| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Corpus Christi is hosting the 42nd annual Beach to |

| 6 | 7 | | Bay Relay Marathon on May 20, 2017; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1976 by Captain John Butterfield, Beach |

| 8 | 9 | | to Bay has grown to be one of the largest relay marathons in the |

| 9 | 10 | | country, with more than 2,000 teams participating and drawing some |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 16,000 spectators; the event gives the local economy a significant |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | boost and raises around $30,000 for a variety of worthwhile causes |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | in the Coastal Bend area; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The 26.2-mile course is divided into six legs of |

| 14 | 15 | | about 4.4 miles each; the race starts on North Padre Island, passes |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | through the Naval Air Station, and ends at McCaughan Park in Corpus |

| 16 | 17 | | Christi, where a postrace celebration ensues; and |

| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Beach to Bay Relay Marathon is always held on |

| 18 | 19 | | Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday in May, to pay tribute to the |

| 19 | 20 | | men and women serving in the U.S. military; moreover, the marathon |

| 20 | 21 | | now offers the Run for a Hero program, which allows teams to race in |

| 21 | 22 | | honor of a past or present member of the armed forces; and |

| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, For more than four decades, the Beach to Bay Relay |

| 23 | 24 | | Marathon has remained an important South Texas tradition, providing |

| 24 | 25 | | local and visiting runners with healthy athletic competition and an |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | opportunity to give back to the community; now, therefore, be it |

| 26 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 27 | 28 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 42nd annual Beach to Bay Relay |

| 28 | 29 | | Marathon and extend to all those associated with the race sincere |

| 29 | 30 | | best wishes for a successful and memorable event; and, be it further |
