| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Brazos Historical Society is celebrating the |

| 6 | 7 | | 100th anniversary of the Schuster House in Freeport during spring |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In 1917, the year the City of Freeport was |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | incorporated, the two-story home was built on a foundation of heavy |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | cedar blocks by George Schuster and his sons, Manuel, Henry, and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Joe, all experienced carpenters; its exterior is graced by a |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | wraparound porch supported by large columns, and the interior |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | features 10-foot ceilings and many windows to keep rooms cool in the |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | summer; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The stout construction and favorable location made |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | the home a place of refuge during hurricanes; in addition, it was |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | used by the Catholic community for catechism classes before their |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | church was completed; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Following the death of his parents, Joe Schuster |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | purchased the home in 1951 from the family estate with his wife, |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Valentine; she continued to live in the home until her passing in |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | 1981, and her children maintained it for the ensuing two decades; in |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | 2003, descendants established the Schuster House Corporation and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | placed the home and many original furnishings in the care of the |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Brazos Historical Society, which undertook a 10-year restoration |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | project; the house is now open to the public as a museum, and in |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | 2016, it received an Official Texas Historical Marker from the |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Texas Historical Commission; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Historic homes are an irreplaceable cultural |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | resource, and the careful preservation of the Schuster House allows |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Texans to learn more about our state's architectural heritage and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | the everyday lives of our forebears; now, therefore, be it |

| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | Schuster House and commend the members of the Brazos Historical |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | Society for their stewardship; and, be it further |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | prepared for the Brazos Historical Society as an expression of high |

| 39 | 40 | | regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
