5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A rich and rewarding life drew to a close with the |

6 | 7 | | passing of Benton Warren Cain of Waxahachie on February 22, 2017, at |

7 | 8 | | the age of 91; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on February 3, 1926, in Yoakum, Benton Cain was |
---|
9 | 10 | | the son of Arthur and Lucy Cain; he graduated from Yoakum High |
---|
10 | 11 | | School and enrolled at Rice University, where he received a |
---|
11 | 12 | | bachelor's degree; during his time at Rice, he felt the call to join |
---|
12 | 13 | | the ministry, and he went on to enter Southwestern Baptist |
---|
13 | 14 | | Theological Seminary and earn his master's degree in religious |
---|
14 | 15 | | studies; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Benton Cain worked as a minister of music and |
---|
16 | 17 | | education at churches in Dallas and in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and |
---|
17 | 18 | | after he was drafted into the United States Army, he drew on his |
---|
18 | 19 | | training to take on the role of chaplain's assistant; returning to |
---|
19 | 20 | | civilian life, he married the former Wanda Schwartz in 1956 while he |
---|
20 | 21 | | was living in Colorado City, Texas; for a time, he served as pastor |
---|
21 | 22 | | of Doole Baptist Church and worked as a schoolteacher and coach in |
---|
22 | 23 | | the town of Melvin, until he and his wife made Waxahachie their home |
---|
23 | 24 | | in 1967; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cain taught language arts at Waxahachie Junior |
---|
25 | 26 | | High School before completing his library certification at The |
---|
26 | 27 | | University of Texas and becoming a librarian at Waxahachie High; |
---|
27 | 28 | | believing that the library should be the center of learning, he |
---|
28 | 29 | | championed the use of computers as an invaluable research tool, and |
---|
29 | 30 | | he took pleasure in helping members of the Junior Historians |
---|
30 | 31 | | explore the library's resources; one of the greatest joys in his |
---|
31 | 32 | | life came when it was announced that the new high school's library |
---|
32 | 33 | | would be named in honor of him and his wife; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, This caring Texan cherished his family, which |
---|
34 | 35 | | included his daughter, Candace, his grandchildren, Moriah and |
---|
35 | 36 | | Robert, and his great-grandchildren, Viola and Gioia; he served the |
---|
36 | 37 | | First Baptist Church of Waxahachie as a deacon and longtime member |
---|
37 | 38 | | of the choir, as well as in many teaching and planning roles; he |
---|
38 | 39 | | wrote poetry in his free time, and he often delighted in sharing his |
---|
39 | 40 | | passion for gardening with visitors to his home; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Although Benton Cain is deeply missed, memories of |
---|
41 | 42 | | his strong faith, his devotion to his family, and his kindness and |
---|
42 | 43 | | generosity to others remain to comfort and inspire those he leaves |
---|
43 | 44 | | behind; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Benton Warren Cain and |
---|
46 | 47 | | extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his passing; and, be it |
