45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A rich and rewarding life drew to a close with the
67 passing of Benton Warren Cain of Waxahachie on February 22, 2017, at
78 the age of 91; and
89 WHEREAS, Born on February 3, 1926, in Yoakum, Benton Cain was
910 the son of Arthur and Lucy Cain; he graduated from Yoakum High
1011 School and enrolled at Rice University, where he received a
1112 bachelor's degree; during his time at Rice, he felt the call to join
1213 the ministry, and he went on to enter Southwestern Baptist
1314 Theological Seminary and earn his master's degree in religious
1415 studies; and
1516 WHEREAS, Benton Cain worked as a minister of music and
1617 education at churches in Dallas and in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and
1718 after he was drafted into the United States Army, he drew on his
1819 training to take on the role of chaplain's assistant; returning to
1920 civilian life, he married the former Wanda Schwartz in 1956 while he
2021 was living in Colorado City, Texas; for a time, he served as pastor
2122 of Doole Baptist Church and worked as a schoolteacher and coach in
2223 the town of Melvin, until he and his wife made Waxahachie their home
2324 in 1967; and
2425 WHEREAS, Mr. Cain taught language arts at Waxahachie Junior
2526 High School before completing his library certification at The
2627 University of Texas and becoming a librarian at Waxahachie High;
2728 believing that the library should be the center of learning, he
2829 championed the use of computers as an invaluable research tool, and
2930 he took pleasure in helping members of the Junior Historians
3031 explore the library's resources; one of the greatest joys in his
3132 life came when it was announced that the new high school's library
3233 would be named in honor of him and his wife; and
3334 WHEREAS, This caring Texan cherished his family, which
3435 included his daughter, Candace, his grandchildren, Moriah and
3536 Robert, and his great-grandchildren, Viola and Gioia; he served the
3637 First Baptist Church of Waxahachie as a deacon and longtime member
3738 of the choir, as well as in many teaching and planning roles; he
3839 wrote poetry in his free time, and he often delighted in sharing his
3940 passion for gardening with visitors to his home; and
4041 WHEREAS, Although Benton Cain is deeply missed, memories of
4142 his strong faith, his devotion to his family, and his kindness and
4243 generosity to others remain to comfort and inspire those he leaves
4344 behind; now, therefore, be it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4546 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Benton Warren Cain and
4647 extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his passing; and, be it
4748 further
4849 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4950 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5051 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Benton
5152 Cain.
