H.R. No. 846 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Lorugene Young of Houston has distinguished herself through her commitment to serving her community; and WHEREAS, A native of Ruston, Louisiana, Lorugene Young moved to Houston to attend Texas Southern University, where she earned her master's and doctoral degrees; she went on to enjoy a 40-year career in education, in which she taught history, English, and physical education and also coached for more than 20 years; in 2012, she retired from North Forest Independent School District; and WHEREAS, Almost three decades ago, this outstanding Texan began collecting and distributing Christmas gifts to local children in need; what started as a small project out of her home has since grown into the largest toy drive in Harris County, called Operation: Stocking Stuffer, which today is hosted by the Houston Fire Department and KPRC Channel 2; and WHEREAS, Ms. Young has further benefited her fellow residents over the years by organizing school supply giveaways, Easter egg hunts, and clothes drives, and she established a scholarship program for high school students pursuing higher education at Prairie View A&M University; and WHEREAS, With great compassion, dedication, and initiative, Lorugene Young has made a positive difference in many lives, and it is indeed fitting to recognize her many contributions to the city of Houston and the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby honor Lorugene Young for her service to the Houston community and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Young as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
