H.R. No. 895
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 125th anniversary of the founding of the
community of Lindsay is being celebrated on March 25, 2017; and
WHEREAS, On that date in 1892, Lindsay's first Mass was
celebrated by Father Hugo Bardenhewer in the home of William
Flusche; this event represented the first true community gathering
of this German Catholic colony in Cooke County, and ever since,
residents of Lindsay have considered it the founding of their town;
and
WHEREAS, Named for Judge J. M. Lindsay, the community was
established alongside the Gainesville, Henrietta, and Western
Railway in the location where a switching station had been built in
1887; settlement began after two German brothers, Anton and August
Flusche, signed several contracts in 1891 granting them 9,300 acres
of land in the area, and in October of that year, the first
colonists arrived; and
WHEREAS, A frame building was constructed to serve as
Lindsay's first church, and it was replaced by a brick sanctuary in
1903; that structure was destroyed by a tornado in 1917 but was
rebuilt two years later; the first school opened in 1893, and it was
run by the Sisters of Divine Providence until the system went public
in 1932; the town was officially incorporated in 1959; today,
Lindsay is home to about 1,000 residents, many of whom are
descendants of the enterprising men and women who established the
community in the early 1890s; and
WHEREAS, On this special occasion, the people of Lindsay may
indeed take great pride in their city's rich history as they look
forward to the opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the
founding of Lindsay and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes
for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the City of Lindsay as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
