| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 125th anniversary of the founding of the |

| 6 | 7 | | community of Lindsay is being celebrated on March 25, 2017; and |
|---|
| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, On that date in 1892, Lindsay's first Mass was |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | celebrated by Father Hugo Bardenhewer in the home of William |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Flusche; this event represented the first true community gathering |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | of this German Catholic colony in Cooke County, and ever since, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | residents of Lindsay have considered it the founding of their town; |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Named for Judge J. M. Lindsay, the community was |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | established alongside the Gainesville, Henrietta, and Western |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Railway in the location where a switching station had been built in |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | 1887; settlement began after two German brothers, Anton and August |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Flusche, signed several contracts in 1891 granting them 9,300 acres |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | of land in the area, and in October of that year, the first |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | colonists arrived; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, A frame building was constructed to serve as |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Lindsay's first church, and it was replaced by a brick sanctuary in |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | 1903; that structure was destroyed by a tornado in 1917 but was |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | rebuilt two years later; the first school opened in 1893, and it was |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | run by the Sisters of Divine Providence until the system went public |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | in 1932; the town was officially incorporated in 1959; today, |

| 26 | 27 | | Lindsay is home to about 1,000 residents, many of whom are |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | descendants of the enterprising men and women who established the |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | community in the early 1890s; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, On this special occasion, the people of Lindsay may |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | indeed take great pride in their city's rich history as they look |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | forward to the opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore, be it |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the |

| 34 | 35 | | founding of Lindsay and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes |
