45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The city of Victoria lost an admired civic leader
67 with the passing of Dorothy Jean Walston Alcorn on February 26,
78 2017, at the age of 86; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Houston on January 24, 1931, the former
910 Dorothy Walston was the daughter of Virgil and Dorothy Walston; she
1011 graduated from Midland High School and completed her bachelor's
1112 degree in English and education at the University of Houston; in
1213 1952, she married Charles W. "Chuck" Alcorn Jr., and they became the
1314 parents of three children, Dorothy, Lexey, and Charles; Mrs. Alcorn
1415 taught third grade for three years while residing in Abilene, and
1516 the family later lived in Midland and Andrews before settling in
1617 Victoria in 1961; and
1718 WHEREAS, Mrs. Alcorn became involved in higher education
1819 advocacy after completing a master of arts in interdisciplinary
1920 studies degree in creative writing and English at the University of
2021 Houston-Victoria; in 1987, she was appointed to the University of
2122 Houston System Board of Regents, and during her six-year tenure,
2223 she served as board secretary and as chair of the Facilities and
2324 Planning Committee; she also supervised the renovation of the
2425 Wortham House, home of the UH chancellor; a longtime member of the
2526 UHV President's Advisory Board, she served on three president's
2627 search committees; she hosted myriad university functions at her
2728 home, and her efforts in behalf of the UHV/American Book Review
2829 Reading Series helped enhance community interest in literature; in
2930 1993, the university named its Dorothy Alcorn Auditorium in her
3031 honor, and the following year, she received the institution's
3132 highest honor, the Presidential Medal; she donated her home to UHV
3233 in 2015 for use as the president's residence; and
3334 WHEREAS, Over the years, Mrs. Alcorn served in numerous
3435 leadership roles, including president of the Victoria Junior League
3536 and chair of the renovation committees for the Victoria Courthouse
3637 and O'Connor-Proctor Building; she was also a member of the
3738 Victoria Performing Arts Steering Committee and the Victoria
3839 Airport Commission, among many other civic groups; and
3940 WHEREAS, Dorothy Alcorn gave freely of her time, talents, and
4041 resources to benefit higher education and the arts, and her
4142 devotion to her family and her community will remain a source of
4243 inspiration to all who were privileged to know her; now, therefore,
4344 be it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4546 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dorothy Alcorn and
4647 extend sincere sympathy to her loved ones; and, be it further
4748 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4849 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4950 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dorothy
5051 Alcorn.
