5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The city of Victoria lost an admired civic leader |

6 | 7 | | with the passing of Dorothy Jean Walston Alcorn on February 26, |

7 | 8 | | 2017, at the age of 86; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Houston on January 24, 1931, the former |
---|
9 | 10 | | Dorothy Walston was the daughter of Virgil and Dorothy Walston; she |
---|
10 | 11 | | graduated from Midland High School and completed her bachelor's |
---|
11 | 12 | | degree in English and education at the University of Houston; in |
---|
12 | 13 | | 1952, she married Charles W. "Chuck" Alcorn Jr., and they became the |
---|
13 | 14 | | parents of three children, Dorothy, Lexey, and Charles; Mrs. Alcorn |
---|
14 | 15 | | taught third grade for three years while residing in Abilene, and |
---|
15 | 16 | | the family later lived in Midland and Andrews before settling in |
---|
16 | 17 | | Victoria in 1961; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Alcorn became involved in higher education |
---|
18 | 19 | | advocacy after completing a master of arts in interdisciplinary |
---|
19 | 20 | | studies degree in creative writing and English at the University of |
---|
20 | 21 | | Houston-Victoria; in 1987, she was appointed to the University of |
---|
21 | 22 | | Houston System Board of Regents, and during her six-year tenure, |
---|
22 | 23 | | she served as board secretary and as chair of the Facilities and |
---|
23 | 24 | | Planning Committee; she also supervised the renovation of the |
---|
24 | 25 | | Wortham House, home of the UH chancellor; a longtime member of the |
---|
25 | 26 | | UHV President's Advisory Board, she served on three president's |
---|
26 | 27 | | search committees; she hosted myriad university functions at her |
---|
27 | 28 | | home, and her efforts in behalf of the UHV/American Book Review |
---|
28 | 29 | | Reading Series helped enhance community interest in literature; in |
---|
29 | 30 | | 1993, the university named its Dorothy Alcorn Auditorium in her |
---|
30 | 31 | | honor, and the following year, she received the institution's |
---|
31 | 32 | | highest honor, the Presidential Medal; she donated her home to UHV |
---|
32 | 33 | | in 2015 for use as the president's residence; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Mrs. Alcorn served in numerous |
---|
34 | 35 | | leadership roles, including president of the Victoria Junior League |
---|
35 | 36 | | and chair of the renovation committees for the Victoria Courthouse |
---|
36 | 37 | | and O'Connor-Proctor Building; she was also a member of the |
---|
37 | 38 | | Victoria Performing Arts Steering Committee and the Victoria |
---|
38 | 39 | | Airport Commission, among many other civic groups; and |
---|
39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Dorothy Alcorn gave freely of her time, talents, and |
---|
40 | 41 | | resources to benefit higher education and the arts, and her |
---|
41 | 42 | | devotion to her family and her community will remain a source of |
---|
42 | 43 | | inspiration to all who were privileged to know her; now, therefore, |
---|
43 | 44 | | be it |
---|
44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dorothy Alcorn and |
---|
46 | 47 | | extend sincere sympathy to her loved ones; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
48 | 49 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
49 | 50 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dorothy |
