5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Many residents of Nueces County are gathering on |

6 | 7 | | April 6, 2017, to mark the 100th anniversary of the United States' |

7 | 8 | | entry into World War I; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In early 1917, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, |
---|
9 | 10 | | and Japan, known as the Allied Powers, were engaged in the Great War |
---|
10 | 11 | | against Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, or the |
---|
11 | 12 | | Central Powers; German submarines sank several U.S. ships in |
---|
12 | 13 | | February and March, killing numerous seamen and citizens, and |
---|
13 | 14 | | British naval intelligence revealed that Germany was attempting to |
---|
14 | 15 | | draw Mexico into an alliance against the United States; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson appeared before a joint |
---|
16 | 17 | | session of Congress on April 2, 1917, to request a declaration of |
---|
17 | 18 | | war against Germany; two days later, the U.S. Senate voted in |
---|
18 | 19 | | support, and with the concurrence of the House of Representatives |
---|
19 | 20 | | on April 6, the U.S. joined forces with the Allies; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In 1918, the infusion of American troops and |
---|
21 | 22 | | resources into the western front turned the tide definitively in |
---|
22 | 23 | | favor of the Allies, and Germany signed an armistice agreement on |
---|
23 | 24 | | November 11; by then, more than 116,000 members of the U.S. military |
---|
24 | 25 | | had perished and a further 200,000 had been wounded; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, During the war, Nueces County was the location of |
---|
26 | 27 | | Camp Scurry, a 200-acre training base for the 4th Field Artillery |
---|
27 | 28 | | Regiment and the 5th Engineer Battalion; the centennial observance |
---|
28 | 29 | | in the county is sponsored by the Nueces County Historical |

29 | 30 | | Commission, the Nueces County Historical Society, the Corpus |

30 | 31 | | Christi Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American |

31 | 32 | | Revolution, the Corpus Christi Chapter of the United Daughters of |

34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, World War I marked the beginning of an era of seismic |

36 | 37 | | opportunity to reflect on the patriotism and sacrifice that are |

37 | 38 | | synonymous with that cataclysmic rupture, as well as on the causes |

38 | 39 | | that precipitated the conflict and the consequences that flowed |

39 | 40 | | from it; now, therefore, be it |

40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the Nueces County observance of the |

42 | 43 | | centennial of the United States' entry into World War I and extend |
---|
43 | 44 | | to all those participating sincere best wishes for a memorable and |
---|
44 | 45 | | meaningful event. |
