45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Many residents of Nueces County are gathering on
67 April 6, 2017, to mark the 100th anniversary of the United States'
78 entry into World War I; and
89 WHEREAS, In early 1917, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy,
910 and Japan, known as the Allied Powers, were engaged in the Great War
1011 against Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, or the
1112 Central Powers; German submarines sank several U.S. ships in
1213 February and March, killing numerous seamen and citizens, and
1314 British naval intelligence revealed that Germany was attempting to
1415 draw Mexico into an alliance against the United States; and
1516 WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson appeared before a joint
1617 session of Congress on April 2, 1917, to request a declaration of
1718 war against Germany; two days later, the U.S. Senate voted in
1819 support, and with the concurrence of the House of Representatives
1920 on April 6, the U.S. joined forces with the Allies; and
2021 WHEREAS, In 1918, the infusion of American troops and
2122 resources into the western front turned the tide definitively in
2223 favor of the Allies, and Germany signed an armistice agreement on
2324 November 11; by then, more than 116,000 members of the U.S. military
2425 had perished and a further 200,000 had been wounded; and
2526 WHEREAS, During the war, Nueces County was the location of
2627 Camp Scurry, a 200-acre training base for the 4th Field Artillery
2728 Regiment and the 5th Engineer Battalion; the centennial observance
2829 in the county is sponsored by the Nueces County Historical
2930 Commission, the Nueces County Historical Society, the Corpus
3031 Christi Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American
3132 Revolution, the Corpus Christi Chapter of the United Daughters of
3233 the Confederacy, and Old Bayview Chapter No. 479 of the National
3334 Society United States Daughters of 1812; and
3435 WHEREAS, World War I marked the beginning of an era of seismic
3536 change around the globe, and this milestone anniversary provides an
3637 opportunity to reflect on the patriotism and sacrifice that are
3738 synonymous with that cataclysmic rupture, as well as on the causes
3839 that precipitated the conflict and the consequences that flowed
3940 from it; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby commemorate the Nueces County observance of the
4243 centennial of the United States' entry into World War I and extend
4344 to all those participating sincere best wishes for a memorable and
4445 meaningful event.
