14 | 14 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

15 | 15 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 21, Education Code, is |
---|
16 | 16 | | amended by adding Section 21.010 to read as follows: |

17 | 17 | | Sec. 21.010. FIRST DAY OF TEACHER SERVICE. (a) Except as |
---|
18 | 18 | | provided by Subsection (b), a school district may not require a |
---|
19 | 19 | | teacher to report for service at the beginning of a school year |
---|
20 | 20 | | earlier than the seventh business day before the first day that |
---|
21 | 21 | | instruction will be provided to students. |

22 | 22 | | (b) A school district may require a teacher who is in the |
---|
23 | 23 | | teacher's first year of employment with the district to report for |
---|
24 | 24 | | service at the beginning of a school year up to 10 business days |
---|
25 | 25 | | before the first day that instruction will be provided to students. |

26 | 26 | | SECTION 2. Section 21.010, Education Code, as added by this |
---|
27 | 27 | | Act, applies beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. |
---|
28 | 28 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
