| 7 | 7 | | relating to the establishment by the commissioner of education of |

| 8 | 8 | | an advanced computer science program for high school students. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 28, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | amended by adding Section 28.018 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Sec. 28.018. ADVANCED COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAM. (a) The |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | commissioner by rule shall develop and implement a program under |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | which: |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (1) students in participating school districts may |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | comply with the curriculum requirements for the third mathematics |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | credit under Section 28.025(b-1)(2) or the third science credit |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | under Section 28.025(b-1)(3) by successfully completing an |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | advanced computer science course; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (2) participating school districts implement rigorous |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | standards, as developed by the commissioner, for advanced computer |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | science courses that are focused on the creation and use of software |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and computing technologies. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (b) The commissioner shall adopt rules as necessary to |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | administer this section. |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | SECTION 2. The commissioner of education shall establish |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | the program under Section 28.018, Education Code, as added by this |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Act, not later than September 1, 2017. |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
