66 AN ACT
77 relating to the establishment by the commissioner of education of
88 an advanced computer science program for high school students.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 28, Education Code, is
1111 amended by adding Section 28.018 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 28.018. ADVANCED COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAM. (a) The
1313 commissioner by rule shall develop and implement a program under
1414 which:
1515 (1) students in participating school districts may
1616 comply with the curriculum requirements for the third mathematics
1717 credit under Section 28.025(b-1)(2) or the third science credit
1818 under Section 28.025(b-1)(3) by successfully completing an
1919 advanced computer science course; and
2020 (2) participating school districts implement rigorous
2121 standards, as developed by the commissioner, for advanced computer
2222 science courses that are focused on the creation and use of software
2323 and computing technologies.
2424 (b) The commissioner shall adopt rules as necessary to
2525 administer this section.
2626 SECTION 2. The commissioner of education shall establish
2727 the program under Section 28.018, Education Code, as added by this
2828 Act, not later than September 1, 2017.
2929 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3030 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3131 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3232 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3333 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
