| 9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 56, Education Code, is | |
| 11 | 11 | amended by adding Section 56.0065 to read as follows: | |
| 12 | 12 | Sec. 56.0065. STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS FOR | |
| 13 | 13 | VETERANS AND FAMILIES; EQUAL PROTECTION. An institution of higher | |
| 14 | 14 | education may not impose additional obligations or burdens | |
| 15 | 15 | concerning payment or registration on a student eligible for state | |
| 16 | 16 | and federal student financial assistance programs available to | |
| 17 | 17 | military veterans or their family members that are not otherwise | |
| 18 | 18 | required by those programs to be imposed for the purpose of | |
| 19 | 19 | receiving that assistance. | |
| 20 | 20 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | |
| 21 | 21 | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | |
| 22 | 22 | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | |
| 23 | 23 | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | |
| 24 | 24 | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
