A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to automatic admission to general academic teaching
institutions for valedictorians of certain high school graduating
classes.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Section 51.803, Education Code, is amended by
adding Subsection (a-3) to read as follows:
(a-3) Beginning with admissions for the 2018-2019 academic
year and notwithstanding Subsections (a) and (a-1), each general
academic teaching institution shall admit an applicant for
admission to the institution as an undergraduate student if:
(1) the applicant is the sole valedictorian of the
applicant's high school graduating class; and
(2) the size of the class is too small for the
valedictorian to be ranked at the lowest percentile that would
qualify for automatic admission under Subsection (a) or (a-1) as
applicable.
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
