7 | 7 | | relating to a study by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles of |

8 | 8 | | alternative registration technologies for commercial motor |
---|
9 | 9 | | vehicles. |

10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Chapter 1003, Transportation Code, is amended by |
---|
12 | 12 | | adding Section 1003.006 to read as follows: |
---|
13 | 13 | | Sec. 1003.006. STUDY ON REGISTRATION OF COMMERCIAL MOTOR |
---|
14 | 14 | | VEHICLES. (a) The department shall: |
---|
15 | 15 | | (1) conduct a study that: |
---|
16 | 16 | | (A) identifies and assesses alternative |
---|
17 | 17 | | technologies for registering commercial motor vehicles to replace |
---|
18 | 18 | | license plates, permits, and other existing documentation and |
---|
19 | 19 | | registration methods currently in use in this state; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | (B) evaluates the safety and suitability for use |
---|
21 | 21 | | on roadways of the technologies identified under Paragraph (A); and |
---|
22 | 22 | | (2) submit a report on the results of the study to the |
---|
23 | 23 | | governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker of the house of |
---|
24 | 24 | | representatives, and the chair of the standing committee of each |
---|
25 | 25 | | house of the legislature with primary jurisdiction over |
---|
26 | 26 | | transportation issues not later than December 21, 2018. |
---|
27 | 27 | | (b) The department may collaborate with another state |
---|
28 | 28 | | agency or a research division of an institution of higher education |
---|
29 | 29 | | in this state to conduct the study. |
---|
30 | 30 | | (c) This section expires January 1, 2019. |
---|
31 | 31 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
---|
32 | 32 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
---|
33 | 33 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
---|
34 | 34 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
---|
35 | 35 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
---|
