55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to a study by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles of
88 alternative registration technologies for commercial motor
99 vehicles.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Chapter 1003, Transportation Code, is amended by
1212 adding Section 1003.006 to read as follows:
1313 Sec. 1003.006. STUDY ON REGISTRATION OF COMMERCIAL MOTOR
1414 VEHICLES. (a) The department shall:
1515 (1) conduct a study that:
1616 (A) identifies and assesses alternative
1717 technologies for registering commercial motor vehicles to replace
1818 license plates, permits, and other existing documentation and
1919 registration methods currently in use in this state; and
2020 (B) evaluates the safety and suitability for use
2121 on roadways of the technologies identified under Paragraph (A); and
2222 (2) submit a report on the results of the study to the
2323 governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker of the house of
2424 representatives, and the chair of the standing committee of each
2525 house of the legislature with primary jurisdiction over
2626 transportation issues not later than December 21, 2018.
2727 (b) The department may collaborate with another state
2828 agency or a research division of an institution of higher education
2929 in this state to conduct the study.
3030 (c) This section expires January 1, 2019.
3131 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3232 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3333 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3434 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3535 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
