57 relating to Texas Military Heroes Day in public schools.
68 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
79 SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is
810 amended by adding Section 29.9071 to read as follows:
911 Sec. 29.9071. TEXAS MILITARY HEROES DAY. (a) To educate
1012 students about the sacrifices made by brave Texans who have served
1113 in the armed forces of the United States, the governor shall
1214 designate a day to be known as Texas Military Heroes Day in public
1315 schools.
1416 (b) Texas Military Heroes Day shall include appropriate
1517 instruction, as determined by each school district. Instruction
1618 may include:
1719 (1) information about persons who have served in the
1820 armed forces of the United States and are from the community or the
1921 geographic area in which the district is located; and
2022 (2) participation, in person or using technology, in
2123 age-appropriate learning projects at battlefields and gravesites
2224 associated with a person who has served in the armed forces.
2325 (c) The agency may collaborate with other state agencies to
2426 promote Texas Military Heroes Day.
2527 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018
2628 school year.
2729 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2830 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2931 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3032 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3133 Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
