55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to curriculum requirements in American history at
88 institutions of higher education.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 51.302(b), Education Code, is amended to
1111 read as follows:
1212 (b) Except as provided by Subsection (c), a college or
1313 university receiving state support or state aid from public funds
1414 may not grant a baccalaureate degree or a lesser degree or academic
1515 certificate to any person unless the person has credit for six
1616 semester hours or its equivalent in American history [History]. A
1717 student must [is entitled to] submit [as much as] three semester
1818 hours of credit or its equivalent from a course providing a
1919 comprehensive survey of American history or [in] Texas history
2020 [History] in partial satisfaction of this requirement. The
2121 remaining three semester hours of credit or its equivalent may be
2222 satisfied by credit from any American history or Texas history
2323 course. The college or university may determine that a student has
2424 satisfied this requirement in whole or part on the basis of credit
2525 granted to the student by the college or university for a
2626 substantially equivalent course completed at another accredited
2727 college or university, or on the basis of the student's successful
2828 completion of an advanced standing examination administered on the
2929 conditions and under the circumstances common for the college or
3030 university's advanced standing examinations. The college or
3131 university may grant as much as three semester hours of credit or
3232 its equivalent toward satisfaction of this requirement for
3333 substantially equivalent work completed by a student in the program
3434 of an approved senior R.O.T.C. unit.
3535 SECTION 2. The changes in law made by this Act apply only to
3636 the curriculum requirements established for a degree or certificate
3737 program offered by an institution of higher education beginning
3838 with undergraduate students who initially enroll in the institution
3939 for the 2018 fall semester.
4040 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
