| 8 | 8 | | students to receive a Texas Armed Services Scholarship. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 61.9772, Education Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | amending Subsections (b) and (c) and adding Subsection (d) to read |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | (b) In each year, the governor and the lieutenant governor |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | may each appoint two students and each state senator and each state |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | representative may appoint one student to receive an initial |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | scholarship under this subchapter. The board by rule shall |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | establish a process so that for each appointment under this section |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the appointing officer may submit the name of an alternate student |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | for the scholarship. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (c) For a student to continue to receive a scholarship |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | awarded under this subchapter, the student must maintain |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | satisfactory academic progress as determined by the board |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | [institution in which the student is enrolled]. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (d) If an eligible alternate student is submitted to the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | board under Subsection (b) and the board determines a student |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | appointed under Subsection (b) to receive an initial scholarship |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | fails to maintain eligibility or otherwise meet the requirements to |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | continue receiving the scholarship, beginning with the academic |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | year following the determination the board shall award the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | remaining term of the initial scholarship to the corresponding |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | alternate student submitted to the board by the appointing officer |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | under Subsection (b). |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
