8 | 8 | curriculum initiative by a school district. | |
9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. Section 28.002(g), Education Code, is amended to | |
11 | 11 | read as follows: | |
12 | 12 | (g) A local instructional plan may draw on state curriculum | |
13 | 13 | frameworks and program standards as appropriate. Each district is | |
14 | 14 | encouraged to exceed minimum requirements of law and State Board of | |
15 | 15 | Education rule. Each district shall ensure that all children in the | |
16 | 16 | district participate actively in a balanced curriculum designed to | |
17 | 17 | meet individual needs. Before the adoption of a major curriculum | |
18 | 18 | initiative, including the use of a curriculum management system, a | |
19 | 19 | district must use a process that: | |
20 | 20 | (1) includes student and teacher input; | |
21 | 21 | (2) provides district employees with the opportunity | |
22 | 22 | to express opinions regarding the initiative; and | |
23 | 23 | (3) includes a meeting of the board of trustees of the | |
24 | 24 | district at which: | |
25 | 25 | (A) information regarding the initiative is | |
26 | 26 | presented, including the cost of the initiative and any | |
27 | 27 | alternatives that were considered; and | |
28 | 28 | (B) members of the public and district employees | |
29 | 29 | are given the opportunity to comment regarding the initiative. | |
30 | 30 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
