11 | 7 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

12 | 8 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.025(b-2), Education Code, as amended |
---|
13 | 9 | | by Chapters 211 (H.B. 5) and 214 (H.B. 2201), Acts of the 83rd |
---|
14 | 10 | | Legislature, Regular Session, 2013, is reenacted and amended to |
---|
15 | 11 | | read as follows: |
---|
16 | 12 | | (b-2) In adopting rules under Subsection (b-1), the State |
---|
17 | 13 | | Board of Education shall: |
---|
18 | 14 | | (1) provide for a student to comply with the |
---|
19 | 15 | | curriculum requirements for an advanced English course under |
---|
20 | 16 | | Subsection (b-1)(1) [taken after successful completion of English |
---|
21 | 17 | | I, English II, and English III], for an advanced mathematics course |
---|
22 | 18 | | under Subsection (b-1)(2) [taken after the successful completion of |
---|
23 | 19 | | Algebra I and geometry], and for any advanced science course under |
---|
24 | 20 | | Subsection (b-1)(3) by successfully completing a course in the |
---|
25 | 21 | | appropriate content area that has been approved as an advanced |
---|
26 | 22 | | course by board rule or that is offered as an advanced course for |
---|
27 | 23 | | credit without board approval as provided by Section 28.002(g-1); |
---|
28 | 24 | | and |
---|
29 | 25 | | (2) allow a student to comply with the curriculum |
---|
30 | 26 | | requirements for the third and fourth mathematics credits under |
---|
31 | 27 | | Subsection (b-1)(2) or the third and fourth science credits under |
---|
32 | 28 | | Subsection (b-1)(3) by successfully completing an advanced career |
---|
33 | 29 | | and technical course designated by the State Board of Education as |
---|
34 | 30 | | containing substantively similar and rigorous academic content. |
---|
35 | 31 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 |
---|
36 | 32 | | school year. |
---|
37 | 33 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
---|
38 | 34 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
---|
39 | 35 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
---|
40 | 36 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
---|
41 | 37 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
