55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Each year, Big Spring celebrates the holiday season
77 with a spectacular display featuring more than 100 lighted
88 poinsettias, and this much-anticipated event has become well known
99 throughout the Lone Star State and beyond; and
1010 WHEREAS, The Comanche Trail Festival of Lights draws more
1111 than 20,000 visitors annually to view the giant lighted
1212 poinsettias, some up to 150 feet tall, that are placed throughout
1313 Comanche Trail Park; the display includes over one million lights
1414 in total, and guests can view the splendid decorations by car or
1515 from a walking trail; and
1616 WHEREAS, Launched in 1997, the festival was founded by Big
1717 Spring resident Pat Simmons; over the years, the celebration has
1818 enjoyed the support of the city and many dedicated Howard County
1919 volunteers, and it has grown steadily in size and popularity; and
2020 WHEREAS, Enthusiasm for the festival has prompted local
2121 residents to expand the event throughout the city; every December,
2222 many private homes are decorated with illuminated poinsettias,
2323 further contributing to the magical holiday ambiance; and
2424 WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Comanche Trail Festival of
2525 Lights has become a West Texas tradition, and citizens of Big Spring
2626 have embraced their community's reputation as a special place to
2727 experience the joys of the season; now, therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
2929 hereby designate the city of Big Spring as the Lighted Poinsettia
3030 Capital of Texas; and, be it further
3131 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
3232 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
3333 until the 10th anniversary of its designation.
