55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The Purple Heart is a combat decoration awarded to
77 members of the United States armed forces who are wounded by an
88 instrument of war in the hands of the enemy or presented to the next
99 of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds
1010 received in action; and
1111 WHEREAS, In 1932, the Military Order of the Purple Heart was
1212 established to protect and further the interests of Purple Heart
1313 recipients; its membership remains composed entirely of Purple
1414 Heart recipients; and
1515 WHEREAS, Texas is home to 1.5 million veterans, representing
1616 5 percent of the nation's total veteran population; the state has 29
1717 Purple Heart cities, 4 Purple Heart counties, and 9 Purple Heart
1818 universities, which have all committed to recognizing veterans and
1919 honoring their commitments to veterans services; in addition, Texas
2020 is home to Henry T. Waskow New Tech High School in Belton, the first
2121 high school in the nation to earn a Purple Heart School designation,
2222 and to Purple Heart Elementary School in El Paso; and
2323 WHEREAS, Numerous Texas agencies provide services to benefit
2424 former members of the military, including the Texas Veterans
2525 Commission, Texas Veterans Land Board, Office of the Adjutant
2626 General, Texas Health and Human Services Commission, State Bar of
2727 Texas, Department of State Health Services, Department of Assistive
2828 and Rehabilitative Services, Texas Workforce Commission, Texas
2929 Workforce Investment Council, Texas Higher Education Coordinating
3030 Board, Texas Correctional Office on Offenders with Medical or
3131 Mental Impairments, Texas Commission on Jail Standards, Texas
3232 Department of Housing and Community Affairs, and Texas Department
3333 of Agriculture; and
3434 WHEREAS, The State of Texas is dedicated to improving the
3535 lives of its veterans with the highest standard of services, and it
3636 acknowledges the enormous sacrifices made by recipients of the
3737 Purple Heart; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas
3939 hereby recognize Texas as a Purple Heart State; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That the Texas Legislature encourage agencies and
4141 government bodies at all levels to serve veterans with the same
4242 degree of devotion demonstrated by members of the armed forces in
4343 their service to our state and nation.
