6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Purple Heart is a combat decoration awarded to |

7 | 7 | | members of the United States armed forces who are wounded by an |
---|
8 | 8 | | instrument of war in the hands of the enemy or presented to the next |
---|
9 | 9 | | of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds |
---|
10 | 10 | | received in action; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1932, the Military Order of the Purple Heart was |
---|
12 | 12 | | established to protect and further the interests of Purple Heart |
---|
13 | 13 | | recipients; its membership remains composed entirely of Purple |
---|
14 | 14 | | Heart recipients; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Texas is home to 1.5 million veterans, representing |
---|
16 | 16 | | 5 percent of the nation's total veteran population; the state has 29 |
---|
17 | 17 | | Purple Heart cities, 4 Purple Heart counties, and 9 Purple Heart |
---|
18 | 18 | | universities, which have all committed to recognizing veterans and |
---|
19 | 19 | | honoring their commitments to veterans services; in addition, Texas |
---|
20 | 20 | | is home to Henry T. Waskow New Tech High School in Belton, the first |
---|
21 | 21 | | high school in the nation to earn a Purple Heart School designation, |
---|
22 | 22 | | and to Purple Heart Elementary School in El Paso; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Numerous Texas agencies provide services to benefit |
---|
24 | 24 | | former members of the military, including the Texas Veterans |
---|
25 | 25 | | Commission, Texas Veterans Land Board, Office of the Adjutant |
---|
26 | 26 | | General, Texas Health and Human Services Commission, State Bar of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Texas, Department of State Health Services, Department of Assistive |
---|
28 | 28 | | and Rehabilitative Services, Texas Workforce Commission, Texas |
---|
29 | 29 | | Workforce Investment Council, Texas Higher Education Coordinating |
---|
30 | 30 | | Board, Texas Correctional Office on Offenders with Medical or |
---|
31 | 31 | | Mental Impairments, Texas Commission on Jail Standards, Texas |
---|
32 | 32 | | Department of Housing and Community Affairs, and Texas Department |
---|
33 | 33 | | of Agriculture; and |

34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The State of Texas is dedicated to improving the |
---|
35 | 35 | | lives of its veterans with the highest standard of services, and it |
---|
36 | 36 | | acknowledges the enormous sacrifices made by recipients of the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Purple Heart; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | hereby recognize Texas as a Purple Heart State; and, be it further |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Texas Legislature encourage agencies and |
---|
41 | 41 | | government bodies at all levels to serve veterans with the same |
---|
42 | 42 | | degree of devotion demonstrated by members of the armed forces in |
---|
43 | 43 | | their service to our state and nation. |
