| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, For more than four decades, the city of Stamford has |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | played host to the Stamford Art Foundation Western Art Show, the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | oldest continuously held art show and sale in Texas and the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | third-oldest event of its kind in the United States; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, First curated in 1974, the Western Art Show was |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | organized through the efforts of community and business leaders and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | prominent ranchers in the Stamford area, all of whom shared an |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | interest in the promotion and preservation of Western heritage and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | culture; early supporters of the show included Western movie stars, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | former Texas governors, and many individuals who are enshrined in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the ProRodeo and the National and Texas Cowboy Halls of Fame; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of its history the Stamford Western |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Art Show has displayed paintings, drawings, and sculptures from |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | some of the most famous artists of Texas and the West, among whom |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | are luminaries of the Cowboy Artists of America organization and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | multiple individuals who have been chosen as Texas State Artist by |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the Texas Commission on the Arts; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, This prestigious event is operated by the nonprofit |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Stamford Art Foundation, and the show is a broad-based community |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | initiative that draws on the efforts of the organization's |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | 18-member board of directors as well as an additional 130 or more |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | volunteers; proceeds from tickets and art sales benefit the West |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Texas Rehabilitation Center, which provides outpatient therapy and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | rehabilitation services to more than 500 patients daily, regardless |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | of their ability to pay, from locations in Abilene, San Angelo, and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Ozona; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The Western Art Show in Stamford is a prominent |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | event that pays tribute to the treasured legacy of the American West |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | and features the premier artists of the genre, and it is indeed |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | fitting to recognize the community that has been home to this |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | exciting showcase for more than four decades; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | hereby designate the city of Stamford as the Western Art Show |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Capital of Texas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | until the 10th anniversary of its designation. |
