55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Jack Crosby, who died
77 December 30, 2016, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, Jack Crosby was born and raised in Del Rio, Texas;
99 he became a larger-than-life businessman who was beloved for his
1010 kindness and integrity and was respected around the world for his
1111 far-reaching entrepreneurial initiatives; and
1212 WHEREAS, Jack began studying business at The University of
1313 Texas, and he suspended his education for two years to serve as a
1414 gunnery instructor in the United States Navy; upon returning to
1515 school in 1946, he and his friends built living quarters in the
1616 back yard of his fraternity and he earned a varsity letter by
1717 serving as student manager of the university baseball team; and
1818 WHEREAS, After college, Mr. Crosby had humble career
1919 beginnings as an employee in the family appliance business in Del
2020 Rio; in order to increase television sales, he built a 450-foot
2121 tower and successfully brought cable television to the region; in
2222 so doing, he began down a path that would ultimately distinguish
2323 him as a world-renowned media mogul; in addition to developing
2424 Univision, the first Spanish-language broadcast station in the
2525 United States, he built television systems around the globe and
2626 founded companies that later became major media conglomerates; and
2727 WHEREAS, The quintessential entrepreneur, Mr. Crosby
2828 contributed greatly to the growth and development of the City of
2929 Austin; after moving to the capital city in 1966, he founded Rust
3030 Ventures, which led to the creation of Austin Ventures, and his
3131 companies gained recognition for the development of prime
3232 commercial real estate, including establishing One American
3333 Center, and for funding many of the city's most successful
3434 technology companies; a man of many talents and interests, he
3535 also served on the board of directors of Robert Redford's
3636 Sundance Institute and on the board of Orion Pictures; and
3737 WHEREAS, While noted for his passion for business and
3838 entrepreneurial challenge, Jack Crosby was also a devoted
3939 husband and father who embodied the spirit of a true Texas
4040 gentleman in every facet of his life; he was beloved by all who
4141 were privileged to know him, and he leaves behind memories that
4242 will long be cherished by his family and countless friends; now,
4343 therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4545 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4646 family of Jack Crosby; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4848 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4949 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5050 memory of Jack Crosby.
