5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
---|
6 | 6 | | citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Jack Crosby, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | December 30, 2016, at the age of 90; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Jack Crosby was born and raised in Del Rio, Texas; |
---|
9 | 9 | | he became a larger-than-life businessman who was beloved for his |
---|
10 | 10 | | kindness and integrity and was respected around the world for his |
---|
11 | 11 | | far-reaching entrepreneurial initiatives; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Jack began studying business at The University of |
---|
13 | 13 | | Texas, and he suspended his education for two years to serve as a |
---|
14 | 14 | | gunnery instructor in the United States Navy; upon returning to |
---|
15 | 15 | | school in 1946, he and his friends built living quarters in the |
---|
16 | 16 | | back yard of his fraternity and he earned a varsity letter by |
---|
17 | 17 | | serving as student manager of the university baseball team; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, After college, Mr. Crosby had humble career |
---|
19 | 19 | | beginnings as an employee in the family appliance business in Del |
---|
20 | 20 | | Rio; in order to increase television sales, he built a 450-foot |
---|
21 | 21 | | tower and successfully brought cable television to the region; in |
---|
22 | 22 | | so doing, he began down a path that would ultimately distinguish |
---|
23 | 23 | | him as a world-renowned media mogul; in addition to developing |
---|
24 | 24 | | Univision, the first Spanish-language broadcast station in the |
---|
25 | 25 | | United States, he built television systems around the globe and |
---|
26 | 26 | | founded companies that later became major media conglomerates; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The quintessential entrepreneur, Mr. Crosby |
---|
28 | 28 | | contributed greatly to the growth and development of the City of |
---|
29 | 29 | | Austin; after moving to the capital city in 1966, he founded Rust |
---|
30 | 30 | | Ventures, which led to the creation of Austin Ventures, and his |
---|
31 | 31 | | companies gained recognition for the development of prime |
---|
32 | 32 | | commercial real estate, including establishing One American |
---|
33 | 33 | | Center, and for funding many of the city's most successful |
---|
34 | 34 | | technology companies; a man of many talents and interests, he |
---|
35 | 35 | | also served on the board of directors of Robert Redford's |
---|
36 | 36 | | Sundance Institute and on the board of Orion Pictures; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, While noted for his passion for business and |
---|
38 | 38 | | entrepreneurial challenge, Jack Crosby was also a devoted |
---|
39 | 39 | | husband and father who embodied the spirit of a true Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | gentleman in every facet of his life; he was beloved by all who |
---|
41 | 41 | | were privileged to know him, and he leaves behind memories that |
---|
42 | 42 | | will long be cherished by his family and countless friends; now, |
---|
43 | 43 | | therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
46 | 46 | | family of Jack Crosby; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
48 | 48 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
49 | 49 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
50 | 50 | | memory of Jack Crosby. |
