SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 115 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Bobby Joe Morrow, who has been named the 2016 Texas Legend for the Eddie Lucio Scholarship Fund; and WHEREAS, A native of Harlingen, Bobby Morrow was in the 1950s a world-renowned sprinter and an Olympian; he began his athletic career as a football player at San Benito High School and later was a track-and-field athlete at Abilene Christian College; and WHEREAS, In 1955, he won the Amateur Athletic Union 100-yard title, and he defended his title the following year, when he won the sprint double in the national college championships; and WHEREAS, Bobby Morrow was the leader of the American sprint team at the 1956 Summer Olympics; he gained global recognition at the event when he earned the gold medal in the 100-meter dash; he led the American sweep of medals in the 200-meter dash and earned his third gold medal by anchoring the 4x100-meter relay team to a world-record finish; in recognition of his accomplishments, Sports Illustrated named him the 1956 Sportsman of the Year; and WHEREAS, Bobby Morrow is a revered Texan who has been honored for his numerous accomplishments; in October of 2006, San Benito High School named its new sports stadium in his honor, and in 2016, he was inducted into the Texas Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend Bobby Joe Morrow for his outstanding athletic career and congratulate him on being named the 2016 Texas Legend for the Eddie Lucio Scholarship Fund; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
