| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join |

| 3 | 3 | | the citizens of Athens and Texans across the state in celebrating |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | February 7, 2017, as Athens Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The City of Athens was incorporated in 1856, and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | through the years, this charming East Texas town has seen |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | significant growth; today, its diverse economic base includes |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | industrial manufacturing and other businesses, in addition to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | farming and livestock ventures; the town's thriving education |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | system is a key element of its success and productivity, and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Trinity Valley Community College is a first-rate institute; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Athens has been proclaimed the "Original Home of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the Hamburger" by the Texas Legislature in tribute to the role |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | that city resident Fletcher Davis played in the creation of this |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | American favorite; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The city's visitors and residents enjoy such |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | cultural institutions as the East Texas Arboretum, the Henderson |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | County Historical Museum, the Henderson County Performing Arts |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Center, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, where a |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 300,000-gallon aquarium features a variety of native Texas fish |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | in their natural environment; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The City of Athens is a lovely community and an |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a family, and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | residents can confidently embrace their future while continuing |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | to preserve their rich and colorful past; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby commend the people of Athens for their many |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | contributions to the growth and progress of our state and extend |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | to the visiting delegation best wishes for an enjoyable Athens |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 32 | 32 | | the city as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
