55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens
66 across the state in mourning the loss of Harry Middleton, a
77 beloved Austinite and the former director of the LBJ Presidential
88 Library, who died January 20, 2017, at the age of 95; and
99 WHEREAS, Born on October 24, 1921, in Centerville, Iowa,
1010 Harry Middleton was known by his friends and colleagues for his
1111 charisma, sense of honor, compassion, and intellectual vigor,
1212 and he was universally regarded as the most distinguished director to
1313 have ever served in the presidential library system; and
1414 WHEREAS, Harry Middleton enlisted in the United States
1515 Army in 1943, and he served for three years during World War II;
1616 he later served for two years as an officer in the Korean War, and
1717 he retired from military duty with the rank of captain; he earned
1818 a degree in journalism from Louisiana State University in Baton
1919 Rouge; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Middleton met President Lyndon Baines Johnson
2121 in 1966 while writing a report for a presidential commission on
2222 the selective service, and he was hired as a presidential staff
2323 assistant the following year; he wrote speeches and congressional
2424 messages for the president for the duration of his term, and he
2525 returned with him to Texas to collaborate on writing and publishing
2626 The Choices We Face and The Vantage Point: Perspectives of the
2727 Presidency, 1963-1969; and
2828 WHEREAS, Often referred to as the "Dean of Presidential
2929 Library Directors," Harry Middleton became the second director
3030 of the LBJ Presidential Library in 1970, and for more than 31
3131 years, he was manager of one of the most celebrated presidential
3232 libraries in the country; in addition to archiving an extensive
3333 collection of historical materials, he advocated for the formal
3434 collaboration between the presidential library and the Lyndon B.
3535 Johnson School of Public Affairs, a partnership that continues
3636 today to promote the development of innovative research and
3737 public education initiatives; in August of 2000, Texas Monthly
3838 described Mr. Middleton as "The Man Who Saved LBJ" for his
3939 decision to publically release President Johnson's recorded
4040 telephone conversations; and
4141 WHEREAS, Harry Middleton was a highly gifted writer who
4242 earned widespread acclaim for his historical and biographical
4343 publications; he received the Presidential Rank of Meritorious
4444 Executive in 1991, and the following year, he was honored with
4545 the Anti-Defamation League's Torch of Liberty Award; in 1994,
4646 Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson established the Harry Middleton Lectureship
4747 to enable the public and students at The University of Texas at
4848 Austin to attend lectures by renowned speakers free of charge; in
4949 2004, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation established the Harry
5050 Middleton Fellowships to support scholarly work in presidential
5151 studies; and
5252 WHEREAS, Harry Middleton was a treasured citizen of Texas
5353 and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; noted for his
5454 wise counsel and loyalty, he lived a life of great integrity and
5555 purpose, and his legacy at the LBJ Presidential Library will
5656 continue to inspire the highest standards of public engagement
5757 and discourse long into the future; now, therefore, be it
5858 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
5959 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
6060 family of Harry Middleton; and, be it further
6161 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
6262 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
6363 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
6464 memory of Harry Middleton.
