1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 133
2	2	WHEREAS, Chicano History Week commences on February 2,
3	3	2017, the 169th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of
4	4	Guadalupe Hidalgo; and
5	5	WHEREAS, A crucial document in the annals of both the
6	6	United States and Mexico, the 1848 treaty ended two years of war
7	7	between those nations; Mexico recognized the annexation of Texas
8	8	by the United States, accepted the Rio Grande as the state's
9	9	southern border, and gave up about half of its territory,
10	10	including modern-day California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and
11	11	parts of Colorado, Nevada, and Utah, in exchange for $15
12	12	million; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Approximately 80,000 Mexicans lived in the ceded
14	14	area at the time, and the vast majority chose to become United
15	15	States citizens; although the treaty granted protection of their
16	16	property and civil rights and although subsequent adjudication
17	17	in Texas confirmed most of their claims, Mexican Texans in the
18	18	area between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River faced mounting
19	19	pressure and discrimination as the years passed and as more
20	20	Anglos moved into the region; within decades, Mexican Texans
21	21	owned almost no land at all; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Organized efforts to combat discrimination
23	23	against Latinos in Texas date to the early 1900s; in the 1960s and
24	24	1970s, members of the Chicano movement joined the long struggle
25	25	to win social justice for Mexican Americans; composed largely of
26	26	younger Latinos, the movement focused attention on failed
27	27	promises contained in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; at the
28	28	same time, this movement insisted on the value of Mexican culture
29	29	and traditions and gave impetus to the inclusion of the Mexican
30	30	American experience in discussions of United States history; and
31	31	WHEREAS, The contributions of Mexican Americans are
32	32	integral to the story of this nation, and by gaining a better
33	33	understanding of Chicano history, we deepen our appreciation of
34	34	the rich heritage that is shared by all Americans; now,
35	35	therefore, be it
36	36	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
37	37	Legislature, hereby recognize February 2 through 8, 2017, as
38	38	Chicano History Week and encourage all Texans to learn more about
39	39	the important role that Chicanos have played in the saga of the
40	40	Lone Star State.
