3 | 3 | | gathering in Austin on February 7, 2017, to celebrate Matagorda |

4 | 4 | | County Day at the State Capitol; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, One of the oldest counties in Texas, Matagorda |
---|
6 | 6 | | County is located between Galveston and Corpus Christi along the |
---|
7 | 7 | | Gulf Coast; it derives its name from the Spanish word for "thick |
---|
8 | 8 | | brush," in reference to the canebrakes that once lined its |
---|
9 | 9 | | shores; the county is 72 miles southwest of Houston; its location |
---|
10 | 10 | | allows residents easy access to a large metropolitan city while |
---|
11 | 11 | | providing them the quiet lifestyle of a rural South Texas |
---|
12 | 12 | | community; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Noted for its abundant wildlife, Matagorda County |
---|
14 | 14 | | has more species of birds than any other county in the United |
---|
15 | 15 | | States; its diverse geography, from marshes and coastal prairies |
---|
16 | 16 | | to rivers and forests, affords outstanding birding |
---|
17 | 17 | | opportunities, and the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center is |
---|
18 | 18 | | an ideal place to learn about birds, gardening, wildlife, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | native plants; the county is home to three Great Texas Coastal |
---|
20 | 20 | | Birding Trail loops encompassing 17 observation sites; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The county's bays are filled with redfish, |
---|
22 | 22 | | flounder, trout, crab, and shrimp, and the Port of Palacios is |
---|
23 | 23 | | home to more than 200 shrimp boats and handles more commercial |
---|
24 | 24 | | shrimp than any other Texas port; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Ranching, farming, and petroleum remain important |
---|
26 | 26 | | economic resources, and the county benefits from the presence of |
---|
27 | 27 | | the South Texas project; moreover, it recently became the home of |
---|
28 | 28 | | TenarisBayCity, an international pipe manufacturing company; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Bay City is the county seat of Matagorda County |
---|
30 | 30 | | and is known as "the gateway to the great outdoors"; it was |
---|
31 | 31 | | founded in 1849 and named for its location in the center of a vast |
---|
32 | 32 | | coastal prairie known from the time of Stephen F. Austin as "Bay |
---|
33 | 33 | | Prairie"; although the city is 25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, a |
---|
34 | 34 | | port was constructed in the 1960s to link it to the Gulf |
---|
35 | 35 | | Intracoastal Waterway via the Colorado River; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Matagorda County is blessed with a rich history |
---|
37 | 37 | | and abundant natural resources, and its residents may take great |
---|
38 | 38 | | pride in their county's legacy and bright future; now, therefore, |
---|
39 | 39 | | be it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 7, 2017, as Matagorda |
---|
42 | 42 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
---|
43 | 43 | | delegation sincere best wishes for a memorable and meaningful |
---|
44 | 44 | | stay in Austin; and, be it further |

45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
